Calculators and planners built for horse owners

Compare cremation with burial, rendering and compost

If you only use one tool, use this one. Enter your horse's weight and region and it prices cremation, backhoe burial, rendering, composting and landfill side by side, including cost per pound. It's built on equine extension figures such as cremation at $600-$1,000[2] for a 1,000 lb horse. Read how the comparison works for the method.

The per-pound view is the eye-opener. On our estimate, cremation works out at about $0.80/lb[3] of body weight, while rendering and composting land far lower. That doesn't make cremation the wrong choice, but it explains why so many horse owners weigh the alternatives seriously.

Cremation only

Estimate a private equine cremation price

Already set on cremation? The cremation cost calculator starts at a 1,100 lb horse and lets you add collection, after-hours pickup and an upgraded urn. It returns a low-to-high total with each line item listed, so you know what to ask about in a quote.

Transport is the line that varies most for horses, so the calculator shows it separately. If your farm is a long way from the nearest chamber, set collection to the upper end and compare that total with local alternatives before you decide.

What comes back

Find out how much ash your horse will leave

Cremated remains are usually 3-5% of body weight[4]. For a horse, that's tens of pounds, not a small box. The ashes weight estimator gives a range for your horse's weight and an everyday comparison, which helps when deciding whether to keep everything or scatter most of it.

Choosing a container

Size an urn, or several, for a horse

Standard pet urns top out long before a horse's ashes do. The urn size calculator uses the rule of one cubic inch per pound plus a margin, suggests a size, and shows what keepsake urns would take if you split the ashes.

For most horses the answer isn't one urn. Owners often choose a scattering container for the bulk, a mid-size urn for the house and a few keepsakes. Our article on urn sizing and selection for horses has style ideas that suit tack rooms and mantels alike.

For families and barns

Share ashes between family, riders and keepsakes

Horses often belong to more than one heart: the owner, a child who rode them, a lease rider, a barn manager. The ashes sharing planner splits a horse's ashes into keepsake urns, pendants and scattering tubes and shows what's left for the main urn.

Weighing priorities

Rank aftercare options by what matters to you

Some owners care most about cost, others about keeping ashes, speed or environmental impact. The aftercare options comparison lets you set those priorities with sliders and ranks the choices, with honest pros and cons for each.

The whole picture

Add up the full cost of saying goodbye

The cremation or burial fee is only part of it. The memorial budget planner adds the farm call, euthanasia, collection, urn, hair jewelry and a memorial stone, with amounts you can edit. It gives a running range you can print or share with whoever is helping pay.

Horse aftercare costs tend to arrive from several directions at once: the vet's farm call and euthanasia fee, the provider's invoice, then memorial purchases weeks later. Seeing them together in one range is often calmer than meeting them one by one.

Senior horses

See where your horse is in their senior years

Horses commonly live 25-30 years[5] and are usually thought of as geriatric from about 15. The pet age calculator shows your horse's life stage and a gentle prompt about when planning conversations usually start. It's not a prediction; it's a nudge to plan while there's time.

The goodbye itself

Plan a farewell at the barn or in the field

A goodbye for a horse can be as simple as a last bucket of carrots with the people who loved them. The farewell planner helps you decide who comes, where it happens, and small rituals such as a reading, a planted tree or a braided tail, then prints a checklist.

Planned goodbyes give you a chance to think about the practical side too, such as where the vet will stand, where a collection truck can park, and who will hold the other horses. The planner leaves room for those notes.

Afterwards

Check in on how you're coping

Grief after a horse can be heavy and oddly lonely, because not everyone understands the bond. In a 2026 PLOS ONE study of UK adults, 21.0%[6] of people who had lost both a pet and a person said the pet's death was the most distressing. The grief check-in is six private statements and a gentle, non-clinical summary.

Questions people ask

Are the tool prices accurate for my area?

They're sourced ranges, not quotes. Most horse figures come from US extension publications and aren't adjusted for inflation, so local prices may be higher. Use the tools to compare options and spot missing line items, then ask for written totals from providers near you.

Do the tools work for ponies, minis and draft horses?

Yes. Change the weight. A miniature horse might weigh 200 lb and a draft horse 1,800 lb or more, and the ash, urn and cost results scale with it. For very heavy drafts, check that a provider's chamber can take the weight before you rely on a cremation price.

Do you save what I type into the tools?

The tools run in your browser and work without sending your answers anywhere. If you want us to find real prices, use the contact form, which is separate and only sends what you choose to include.

Which tool should I use first?

If you haven't decided between cremation and the alternatives, start with the horse aftercare cost comparison. If cremation is settled, use the cost calculator, then the ashes weight estimator and urn size calculator to plan what comes home.

Is it strange to use these tools while my horse is healthy?

Not at all. Many owners run the numbers years ahead, the same way they budget for colic surgery or a new saddle. Knowing roughly what cremation, burial or rendering would cost, and which one fits your land, means a hard day involves fewer decisions made in a hurry.
