Zollikon, Zurich
Barns, farms and distance around Zollikon
Zollikon itself is mostly residential, but the Zollikerberg plateau and the land toward Forch and Maur still hold farms, meadows and riding stables. Dairy cows, horses and the occasional sheep or goat are part of the landscape just a few minutes from the city boundary. When a large animal dies, a provider needs the stable's location, the animal's size and access details.
Snowfall on the Zollikerberg plateau and the icy roads toward Forch can make a stable hard to reach in January, and a wet spring leaves the fields soft underfoot. A provider will ask about the slope, the gateway and where a vehicle can stand. For companion donkeys, alpacas or goats kept on small holdings nearby, give the species and an honest weight. Stables close to the city often have tight yards, so say whether a trailer can turn.
A country vet will often stay and help after a euthanasia: calling the hauler, holding the gate, keeping the other horses settled. It's worth asking yours ahead of time what they usually arrange for horses in the Zollikon area and roughly what it costs. They've seen every version of this and will tell you honestly which options work locally and which only look good on paper.
With roughly 13,000 residents, Zollikon is the 3rd-largest of the 3 Zurich communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Zurich, about 3 miles (5 km) away, which is where some providers serving Zollikon are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Kusnacht (2 miles), Zurich (3 miles, a larger centre) and Lucerne (24 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation in Switzerland, and where horses fit
People here know cremation well: about 90%[1] of people in Switzerland choose it. What surprises many horse owners is the amount of ash. An adult person leaves about 5.4 lb[5], while a horse leaves several times that, so there's enough to scatter on a favorite trail, bury under a tree and still keep a small urn at home.
That Switzerland rate is a human one, published by bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). We quote it for Zollikon only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, ground and truck access in Zollikon
Ask every provider the same question: what happens if you can't reach my horse? Good ones will have an answer, such as a longer winch cable, a tracked machine or asking you to have a tractor ready. Hearing it in advance tells you whether their truck will actually suit your land, whatever the weather that week.

Budgeting for your horse's aftercare near Zollikon
European quotes tend to be given per kilogram or by weight band, which makes US figures awkward to compare. As a rough conversion, the US midpoint of about $0.80/lb[6] works out at roughly $1.75 per kilogram by our estimate. For a 500 kg horse near Zollikon, treat that as a sense check on any quote, nothing more.

Setbacks, depth and timing in Zurich
Paperwork matters too. In the UK and much of Europe, a horse's passport has to be returned to the organization that issued it after death, and collectors may ask to see it. In the US, a vet's note of the date and cause of death helps if an insurer, a renderer or a landfill asks. Keep those papers with your plan. Here are the local notes for Zurich.
If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- Tell your child plainly and gently, using the words "died" and "dead" rather than "put to sleep" or "went away".
- Let them choose whether to say goodbye, then offer a small task if they'd like one, such as grooming the mane or choosing a ribbon for the tail.
- Save something just for them: one little shoe, a plait of tail hair, the ribbons from their final show.
- Say goodbye before the truck arrives. Most children do better somewhere else while the pony is loaded.
- Plan a small ritual for when the ashes come home, such as scattering a handful in the paddock or planting a shrub.
- Let the pony club, the instructor and the school know, then the adults around your child can make sense of a quiet few weeks.
- Leave talk of a new pony aside until your child brings it up.
Memorials at the barn and beyond
Around Zurich, a dead horse or cow usually goes to the regional collection system unless the owner arranges something else. Individual cremation that returns a horse's ashes has to be booked specifically, and the options within the canton are limited. Ask your vet or the stable on the Zollikerberg what is realistic, how transport works and how long the return takes, while there is no pressure.

Questions people ask
Why does the Zollikon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) reports about 90%[1] of Switzerland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zollikon?
Usually yes. Kusnacht is about 2 miles away, Zurich is about 3 miles away and Lucerne is about 24 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Zurich to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Zurich (roughly 3 miles from Zollikon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I take my horse's body to the provider myself?
Sometimes, if you have a suitable trailer and a safe way to load, and the provider agrees to accept a horse delivered to them. It can save on the haul from a remote farm near Zollikon. Ask first, check any local rules about moving a carcass, and don't attempt it without proper equipment; a horse's body is dangerous to move by hand.
What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?
A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. Soft pasture, steep slopes, low branches and tight turns cause most of the problems. Measure your narrowest gate and describe ground conditions on the day. Our farm access guide covers the details.
How big a container do I need for my horse's ashes?
Much bigger than a typical pet urn. A horse returns tens of pounds of cremated remains, so owners often use a wooden chest or a large lidded crock and keep a smaller urn for display. The urn size calculator gives a volume from your horse's weight, and the ashes weight estimator shows the likely range before anything is ordered.
