Equine cremation in Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich, Switzerland

Where horses live around Zurich, and why it matters

Zurich itself has few large animals, but the countryside around it has plenty. The Zurich Oberland and the farming villages around the lake have dairy farms, horses kept on farms and at riding stables, and smaller holdings with sheep and goats. Farm tracks there can be steep and narrow, so the first question is always how close a vehicle can get.

The city's own guidance separates small animals from large ones such as cattle and horses. Large animals go directly through specialist transport, rather than the ordinary intake route, and the categories depend on weight as well as species. For a horse or farm animal, that usually means arranging collection through the proper channel, or asking about individual cremation with ashes returned, which is possible but offered by only a few providers in Switzerland.

Horse aftercare around Zurich is usually a mix of local and regional help. Your equine vet is probably local, the barn or farm is on the edge of town, and the crematory that can handle a full-size horse may be based out in open country or near a larger center. That's normal. What matters is whether they'll collect from your address, how soon, and what the round trip adds to the bill.

Zurich's population is around 415,000, the largest of the 3 Switzerland communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Zollikon (3 miles), Kusnacht (4 miles) and Lucerne (25 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation habits in Switzerland, and your horse

In Switzerland, where about 90%[1] of people are cremated, most families have collected an urn from a funeral home at some point and have a picture of how it goes. A horse's return is heavier and slower. Expect a sizable container rather than a small box, a longer wait than for a dog, and possibly a drive to pick it up. Knowing that ahead of time avoids a jolt on the day.

bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) is where the Switzerland figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Zurich tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Planning around the Zurich calendar

If you can plan the goodbye, choose a dry day and an early hour. Firm ground and cool air make everything easier: for the vet, for the collection driver and for you. A spot near a gate or the barn aisle is usually better than a distant field.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs

In some European countries, part of the collection fee for a fallen animal is paid by a regional fund or animal-health scheme, while individual cremation is always paid privately. Ask your vet near Zurich whether any such scheme covers horses where you live, and ask each provider for collection and cremation as separate lines.

The Switzerland price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Switzerland allows for a horse

Paperwork matters too. In the UK and much of Europe, a horse's passport has to be returned to the organization that issued it after death, and collectors may ask to see it. In the US, a vet's note of the date and cause of death helps if an insurer, a renderer or a landfill asks. Keep those papers with your plan. Here are the local notes for Switzerland.

Zurich's own guidance is published by City of Zürich Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation.

The first day, step by step

  1. Stop somewhere safe the moment a horse collapses in the trailer, then phone the closest equine vet; at a showground there's usually one on duty.
  2. Ask the venue or show office who they use when a horse dies there. Most have an arrangement already.
  3. Decide whether to bring your horse home versus using a provider close to the venue. Local arrangements tend to cost less and happen sooner than a long drive back.
  4. Check what moving a body over county or state boundaries requires, keeping the vet's documents in the truck for the journey.
  5. Tell your insurer ahead of any disposal, if you hold a policy on your horse.
  6. Have the ashes delivered to your home address, and get the expected date confirmed in writing.
  7. Let other riders help. Showground friends will step in to mind your other horses and get the trailer home; you only have to say yes.

Ashes, keepsakes and a place to visit

Swiss winters and steep terrain complicate large-animal aftercare. Snow can block farm tracks in the hills, and wet spring meadows may be too soft for a heavy vehicle. If you keep an older horse or cow on a slope, think ahead about where a vehicle could reach the body. Have the horse passport or cattle identification ready, as providers usually need it.

Questions people ask

How do Switzerland attitudes to cremation compare?

bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) puts the Switzerland human cremation rate at about 90%[1]. We show it on the Zurich page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zurich?

Usually yes. Zollikon is about 3 miles away, Kusnacht is about 4 miles away and Lucerne is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I keep my horse's tail or a shoe?

Yes, and it's worth doing before collection. Tie a length of tail tightly at the top, then cut above the tie from underneath, where it won't show, so the hair stays together. Save a lock of mane too if you'd like, and pull a shoe or ask your farrier to. Our mane and tail guide explains how to clean and store hair.

Is there a horse crematory near Zurich?

There may not be one close by. Large-animal chambers are expensive to build and run, so they cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy, and owners near Zurich often deal with a provider an hour or more away. Some run collection routes on set days. Tell us your address and we'll look for equine-capable providers that reach you, including any across a county or state line.

Do I need to return my horse's passport after it dies?

Yes. In the UK and across the EU, a horse's passport must go back to its issuing body once the horse has died, and it's worth doing promptly. The collector or crematorium may want to check it when they arrive, so keep it with your plan. Some issuing bodies will stamp and return the passport as a keepsake if you ask.

How is a horse that died in a stall moved out?

Usually with straps and the truck's winch, drawing the body along the aisle and out of the door onto the truck bed. It takes time, and doorways and tight turns can make it harder. Tell the provider the width of the stall door and the aisle when you call. If you're planning a goodbye, choose a spot outside where the truck can reach easily.
