Horse Cremation in Zurich: what to know
Equine cremation isn't something every town in Zurich has. It needs a large-animal chamber and a vehicle with a winch, and those cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy. If you're in one of the 3 communities we cover, open your city below for local detail; if you're between them, choose the nearest.
Most horses in Zurich don't live in town centers. They live on farms, small acreages and boarding barns around places like Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon, and that's where aftercare gets arranged. The crematories that can take a full-size horse are usually out in farm country too, so expect to deal with a provider some distance from home, and to pay for the haul.
We cover 3 communities in Zurich, from Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon.

Farm burial, cremation and local habits
In Zurich, where about 90%[1] of people are cremated, most families have collected an urn from a funeral home at some point and have a picture of how it goes. A horse's return is heavier and slower. Expect a sizable container rather than a small box, a longer wait than for a dog, and possibly a drive to pick it up. Knowing that ahead of time avoids a jolt on the day.
We take the Zurich percentage from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs
Published horse cremation prices are hard to find in Europe, and we'd rather say so than invent them. Many countries handle horses under different rules from dogs and cats, and individual equine cremation is offered by fewer providers than pet cremation. The table shows US extension figures in US dollars as a reference point for what the service involves; ask for a local quote in euros.
In some European countries, part of the collection fee for a fallen animal is paid by a regional fund or animal-health scheme, while individual cremation is always paid privately. Ask your vet near Zurich whether any such scheme covers horses where you live, and ask each provider for collection and cremation as separate lines.
| Option | US reference cost | What to ask for locally |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation (about 450 kg horse) | $600-$1,000[2], plus transport | Individual cremation with ashes returned |
| Rendering collection | $75-$200[3] | The regional carcass-disposal service |
| Composting (about 550 kg horse) | $170-$380[4] | Check it's permitted for horses |

Rules worth knowing in Zurich
Before anyone digs, check the rules for Zurich. Burying a large animal commonly comes with conditions on soil cover, clearance above groundwater and setbacks from wells, streams and property lines, and counties or councils can add their own. A horse grave is big, around 9 ft deep[6] under US extension guidance, so the site matters as much as the permission.
A plan you can leave at the barn
- Check from a distance first if you find your horse down in the morning. Look for breathing before you go near the legs.
- Call the vet even when death is obvious. An unexplained death may be worth a post-mortem, and your vet can say whether it is.
- Ring your insurer before the body leaves, if your horse has mortality cover. Many policies want to hear first and may ask for an examination.
- Take a few photos of where and how you found your horse, for the vet and any insurer, then cover the body.
- Move the other horses to a stable or far field once they've spent a few minutes with their companion.
- Ask how a post-mortem affects getting the ashes back, because some diagnostic labs handle disposal themselves.
- Book collection once those decisions are made, and give the driver a firm route to the spot.
Ashes, keepsakes and a place to visit
Some owners in Zurich scatter ashes at a show ground, a beach they galloped on or along a public trail. Public land usually has its own rules, and many places ask you to request permission first, so check before you go and choose a quiet moment. Private land with the owner's blessing is always simplest.
If Zurich is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask
How much does horse cremation cost in Zurich?
We haven't found published horse cremation prices for Zurich. As a reference, US extension figures put cremation of a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[2] before transport. Ask local providers for a written quote that lists collection, individual cremation and the container, and compare it with local collection services.
Is scattering horse ashes on public land allowed in Zurich?
Rules differ between parks, forests, beaches and council land, and many want you to ask first. Scatter thinly, away from water sources and busy areas. Land you own, or a friend's with their say-so, is easiest, and many owners scatter at a barn, a trail they rode or a friend's farm instead.
Are horses treated like pets under the rules in Zurich?
Not always. Many countries and provinces place horses under livestock or hobby-animal rules rather than pet rules, which affects burial, collection and paperwork. Ask your equine vet which pathway applies to your horse before you choose a provider, and check with your local council or authority before any burial.
How many communities do you cover in Zurich?
We have local horse aftercare guides for 3 communities in Zurich, including Zurich, Kusnacht and Zollikon. Each covers local weather and timing, costs, rules and how collection usually works there. If your farm sits between towns, use the nearest one and give us your exact location when you get in touch.
Do I have to notify anyone when my horse dies in Zurich?
Usually yes, if your horse has official identification. Across much of Europe and the UK, the passport must be returned to the body that issued it, and some countries record equine deaths centrally. Your vet will know what applies in Zurich and who needs to be told.
Is there an equine crematory in Zurich?
There may be one or more, but large-animal chambers are few and far apart, and the nearest to your farm may be across a state or regional border. Tell us where your horse is and we'll look for providers that can take a full-size horse and reach you, wherever they're based.
