Yoakum, Texas
What arranging horse cremation near Yoakum is like
Cattle have long anchored the economy of DeWitt and Lavaca counties, and small places around Yoakum also keep horses, goats, sheep and show pigs. After a large animal dies, your vet or a neighbouring rancher will usually know which haulers work these roads. Caliche lanes and narrow cattle guards can limit access, so give the driver clear directions, gate widths and any low-hanging limbs along the way.
Few places in Texas can cremate an entire horse or cow, and freight from Yoakum adds substantially to the bill. Rendering, and burial on private ground if the county permits, are the usual alternatives here. Whichever you choose, many owners save a small token for the barn or house, such as a halter, a county fair rosette, or a snipped length of tail tied with string.
Don't limit the search to Yoakum. A provider covering Houston and the surrounding farm roads may already pass close to you, and local haulers often work across county lines. When you call, give your farm's address or the nearest road junction, describe the gate and the ground, and ask for the full total, including any charge for the return of the ashes.
About 5,900 people live in Yoakum, which makes it the 233rd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Yoakum sits within easy reach of Shiner (10 miles), Cuero (16 miles) and Hallettsville (17 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Yoakum; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
6.6 million[2]
There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.
$600-$1,000[3]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Farm burial, cremation and local habits
Roughly 55.7%[1] of funerals in Texas now end in cremation, and farm habits here have been shifting in parallel. The old answer for a dead horse, calling the renderer, is fading in many areas because fewer plants now accept horses[5]. That has nudged owners who once used the knacker's truck toward cremation, composting or burial, often without anyone quite deciding to change.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Yoakum, not as a count of pets.
Weather, ground and truck access in Yoakum
Hot, dry summers usually mean hard ground, which helps: a loaded truck is less likely to sink into a paddock in August than after a wet spell. The catch is digging. Baked clay or rocky soil can make a burial slow even with a backhoe, so if burial is your plan, ask the operator whether the ground is workable at this time of year.
In August, a horse's body changes quickly. It swells within hours in the heat, which makes loading harder and can mean a winch truck is essential rather than just helpful. Flies arrive fast as well. A heavy tarp weighted at the edges with tires or feed sacks keeps them off, and a same-morning call to the provider keeps the wait short.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs
Budget for three things: the vet's euthanasia visit, collection from the farm or barn, and the aftercare itself. Rendering pickup is typically $75-$200[6], while cremation runs several hundred dollars more. If the nearest crematory is a long drive away, the haul can move the total a long way, so ask whether they run scheduled routes through your area.

Paperwork and permission in Texas
Moving a horse's body along a public road can fall under animal by-product or transport rules, which is one reason licensed collectors do most of this work. If you plan to trailer your horse to a provider yourself, ask the provider and the agriculture office in Texas whether you need anything in writing first. Cremation itself asks nothing of you.

We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in Yoakum, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
The first day, step by step
- Tell the clinic right away what you want: individual cremation with ashes, a collection service, or bringing your horse home.
- Ask how long they can hold your horse and whether there's a daily storage charge.
- Ask staff to save keepsakes before release: tail hair, some mane, the shoes and the headcollar you arrived with.
- Get the provider's name in writing, whether it's the clinic's usual one or a provider you chose.
- Settle who bills you: some clinics add aftercare to their invoice, others leave it between you and the provider.
- Arrange where the ashes should go: the clinic for you to collect, the barn, or straight to your house.
- Collect your tack, rugs and paperwork, or ask the clinic to set them aside for you.
Ashes, keepsakes and a place to visit
Summer heat around Yoakum is punishing, and a large animal lying in an open pasture breaks down fast. Cover it with a tarp or feed sacks weighted at the edges, move the herd to a different trap and ring round for help early. After a soaking rain, the region's black clay turns slick and sticky, and a loaded truck may be unable to cross a field for several days.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Yoakum?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 98°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Yoakum page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Yoakum?
The closest communities we cover are Shiner (about 10 miles), Cuero (about 16 miles) and Hallettsville (about 17 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Yoakum too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many horses die each year in the US?
About 92,400 horses per year[7] by our estimate, based on USDA's measured death rate of 1.4%[8] applied to roughly 6.6 million[2] horses. You may see a figure of 900,000 quoted online; it comes from an older estimate and would imply a death rate about ten times what USDA measured. Either way, if you're facing this near Yoakum, you're far from alone.
Can one truck collect two horses from my farm near Yoakum?
Often, if the vehicle has room and the provider agrees, and it can lower the haul charge compared with two separate trips. Ask whether each horse will still be cremated individually and how they'll be kept apart and labelled. If the second horse is still alive and just very old, talk to your vet before deciding anything; there's no need to rush that decision.
Does the euthanasia method affect what I can do afterwards?
It can. After a barbiturate euthanasia, a horse carries drug residue, so the body has to go somewhere scavengers can't reach it: deep underground, into a cremation chamber or to an approved processor; drug labels have required that warning since 2003[9]. Some renderers charge more for, or refuse, euthanized horses. If you're set on rendering, ask the renderer before the vet visit.
