How Texas thinks about cremation
About 55.7%[1] of people in Texas choose cremation, so it's familiar to most families, even if older relatives remember farm burials as the norm. For a horse you can have a little of both: cremation now, then a small burial of the ashes on land you'll keep, or scattering along a trail you rode together. Burying ashes is a far smaller job than burying a horse.

Check with the agriculture department or council covering Texas before a pile goes in, even if a neighbor tells you it's fine.

If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- Stay safe first. A horse that has just collapsed can still move suddenly. Keep people back until your vet confirms the death.
- Call your equine vet, using the emergency line after hours, however certain you feel. A vet confirms the death and talks you through the next decisions.
- Save your keepsakes now: take some tail hair from the underside, a small piece of mane and, if you want it, one shoe. Remove the halter as well.
- Cover the body using a sheet or tarpaulin. Give the other horses a short time with their friend, then move them and any other animals away.
- Call a collection service or crematory and describe the access: gate width, ground conditions and how close a truck can get.
- Ask for a written total that shows pickup, cremation and container as separate lines, and check that your horse is cremated on its own.
- Tell the barn or your neighbors what time to expect the truck, so someone has unlocked the gates and brought the other horses in.
Ways to keep your horse close
Low, wet ground is the main challenge for large-animal aftercare near the coast. After heavy rain, pastures can stay waterlogged for days, and a truck may bog down before it reaches the animal. With a senior horse or cow, tour the property alongside your vet beforehand and pick the firmest ground by the road. In late summer, move other animals away from the site if you can.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Nederland?
Usually yes. Port Neches is about 2 miles away, Groves is about 5 miles away and Port Arthur is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Nederland climate change what I should do first?

Some states restrict it, so check first.
How many horses die each year in the US?
About 92,400 horses per year[9] by our estimate, based on USDA's measured death rate of 1.4%[10] applied to roughly 6.6 million[2] horses. You may see a figure of 900,000 quoted online; it comes from an older estimate and would imply a death rate about ten times what USDA measured. Either way, if you're facing this near Nederland, you're far from alone.
Can I bury my horse on my own land in Texas?
Often yes, with conditions. Rules usually cover depth, soil cover, distance from wells, streams and property lines, and how quickly burial must happen.
