Mont Belvieu, Texas
Barns, farms and distance around Mont Belvieu
Low prairie near Cedar Bayou and Trinity Bay drains slowly, and a tropical downpour can leave pastures under water for days. If a horse or cow dies in soft ground, a truck might not reach it straight away. Move the rest of the stock off, drape a tarp over the carcass, and tell the crew honestly how close a vehicle can get.
Once you pass the last subdivision, Chambers County opens into rice fields and cattle pasture, with horses, goats and the odd pig on acreage out toward Anahuac and Winnie. Only a handful of Texas facilities cremate a horse or a cow, so the haul is often the biggest line on the bill. Request a written quote splitting pickup, loading and the cremation itself before you commit.
In farm country around Mont Belvieu, the knacker or dead-stock hauler your family used for decades may have retired, sold up or stopped taking horses. Before you rely on an old number pinned by the barn phone, ring it on a quiet afternoon and check that it still works, what they charge now and whether they come out on weekends. A plan with a dead number in it isn't a plan.
Mont Belvieu is home to about 10,673 people, the 195th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Houston, roughly 29 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Mont Belvieu run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Baytown (9 miles, a larger centre), Barrett (10 miles) and Highlands (10 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Texas thinks about cremation
Cremation is common in Texas, at about 55.7%[2], and so is burial, which leaves room for a middle route: a pet cemetery that accepts large animals. Few do, and a horse-sized plot costs far more than one for a dog, but it gives owners without land a grave they can visit. Ask about access, maintenance and what happens if the cemetery ever closes.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Mont Belvieu, not as a count of pets.
What the seasons mean for a horse in Mont Belvieu
Weather affects two things for horse owners in Mont Belvieu: how quickly the body must be moved, and whether a truck or backhoe can reach it. Heat shortens the time; rain and snow soften or block the route. Your provider will know local conditions well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Budgeting for your horse's aftercare near Mont Belvieu
Burial isn't always the cheapest route. Renting a backhoe has been reported at $250-$500[5], which is less than cremation but more than a rendering pickup, and it assumes you own suitable land. Composting a 1,200 lb horse was estimated at $170-$380[6] in materials, equipment and labor. Each route suits a different situation, and the table sets them side by side.

Paperwork and permission in Texas
Before anyone digs, check the rules for Texas. Burying a large animal commonly comes with conditions on soil cover, clearance above groundwater and setbacks from wells, streams and property lines, and counties or councils can add their own. A horse grave is big, around 9 ft deep[8] under US extension guidance, so the site matters as much as the permission.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Mont Belvieu.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Mont Belvieu may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A plan you can leave at the barn
- In the first hour: have your vet confirm the death, keep people safe and let your horse's companions see the body briefly.
- Before anything leaves the farm: braid and cut a length of tail, save a lock of mane, pull a shoe and keep the halter.
- Within a few hours: settle on cremation, burial, rendering or composting. Whatever the season, a horse's body needs to be dealt with quickly.
- Book the truck or the backhoe, telling them how to find you, the gate width and whether the ground is firm.
- Keep the body covered and out of reach of dogs and wildlife until it's collected.
- In the days after: find out the date the ashes are due back, and let the farrier, the barn and anyone who rode your horse know what happened.
Tail braids, shoes and scattering the ashes
Hurricane Ike in 2008 pushed storm surge across much of Chambers County, and many cattle were lost or stranded. Livestock owners here have learned to keep an evacuation plan ready. Adding aftercare to it, listing your vet, a hauler who works Chambers County and a clear idea of cremation versus rendering, means you can act quickly when conditions are hard.

Questions people ask
Why does the Mont Belvieu page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[2] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Mont Belvieu?
Usually yes. Baytown is about 9 miles away, Barrett is about 10 miles away and Highlands is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 29 miles from Mont Belvieu) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What if I can't afford horse cremation?
You have lower-cost options that are still respectful. Rendering pickup typically runs $75-$200[9], and by our estimate composting saves about $525[10] over cremation at midpoint prices. Ask your vet whether they know of a payment plan, and whether a rescue or a vet school program operates nearby. Whatever you choose, save some tail hair and a shoe before collection.
How is a horse that died in a stall moved out?
Usually with straps and the truck's winch, drawing the body along the aisle and out of the door onto the truck bed. It takes time, and doorways and tight turns can make it harder. Tell the provider the width of the stall door and the aisle when you call. If you're planning a goodbye, choose a spot outside where the truck can reach easily.
Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?
Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.
