La Porte, Texas
How equine cremation works for La Porte owners
The flat coastal plain around Galveston Bay drains slowly, and after heavy rain or a tropical storm, pastures can sit underwater for days. That makes burial difficult and can keep heavy trucks from reaching an animal. In summer heat, a large animal must be moved within hours, so a plan made with your vet ahead of time saves a great deal of stress.
La Porte is mostly suburban and industrial, with few large animals in town, but horse places and small farms turn up inland and toward the rural parts of east Harris and Chambers counties across the bay. If your animal is on land outside town, give the provider the location, gate details and whether low spots in the pasture hold water.
Don't limit the search to La Porte. A provider covering Houston and the surrounding farm roads may already pass close to you, and local haulers often work across county lines. When you call, give your farm's address or the nearest road junction, describe the gate and the ground, and ask for the full total, including any charge for the return of the ashes.
La Porte's population is around 37,983, the 101st-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Houston, about 22 miles (35 km) away, which is where some providers serving La Porte are based.
Our pages for Morgan's Point (1 miles), Shoreacres (3 miles) and Baytown (5 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers La Porte as well.

Cremation in Texas, and where horses fit
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], but family land and farm burial are still part of local life. For horse owners, that often turns the decision into a question about the property: will you keep it, do the rules allow burial, and can machinery get to the spot you'd choose?
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for La Porte, not as a count of pets.
Heat, frost and mud: timing in La Porte
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), schedule a planned euthanasia for early morning. The ground is firmer, the air is cooler, the vet and the driver are fresher, and you're not racing the afternoon heat. Many owners book the truck for the same morning too, so their horse isn't left in a paddock through the hottest part of the day.
Keep a spare tarp, an old halter you don't mind parting with and the numbers of your vet and one collection service on a card in the barn office. In a La Porte summer, when highs sit around 94°F, you don't want to lose an hour hunting for any of them while the day warms up.

What horse cremation costs in La Porte
Why are equine crematories so scarce around La Porte? Partly because the market is small. By our estimate, if every US horse that died in a year were cremated at the $800 midpoint, total spending would be only about $74 million[5], too little to put a large chamber in every county. That's why the haul so often decides the price.

Setbacks, depth and timing in Texas
Moving a horse's body along a public road can fall under animal by-product or transport rules, which is one reason licensed collectors do most of this work. If you plan to trailer your horse to a provider yourself, ask the provider and the agriculture office in Texas whether you need anything in writing first. Cremation itself asks nothing of you.

We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in La Porte, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- Stop somewhere safe if a horse goes down in the trailer, and call the nearest equine vet; show grounds keep one on call.
- Ask the venue or show office who they use when a horse dies there. Most have an arrangement already.
- Decide whether to bring your horse home or arrange aftercare near where it happened. A local provider is usually quicker and cheaper than a long haul back.
- Check what moving a body over county or state boundaries requires, and carry the vet's paperwork with you.
- Tell your insurer ahead of any disposal, if you hold a policy on your horse.
- Have the ashes delivered to your home address, and get the expected date confirmed in writing.
- Let other riders help. At a show, people will look after your remaining horses and the drive home without being asked twice.
Tail braids, shoes and scattering the ashes
Horse and livestock cremation for La Porte owners is arranged through regional services working the Houston area and the upper Texas coast. A private cremation for a horse or steer is the costliest route, and group cremation or rendering comes in far lower. Before any burial on private land near the bay, check Harris County guidance and floodplain rules, which cover a lot of low ground here.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from La Porte?
Usually yes. Morgan's Point is about 1 miles away, Shoreacres is about 3 miles away and Baytown is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the La Porte climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in La Porte follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 22 miles from La Porte) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can one truck collect two horses from my farm near La Porte?
Often, if the vehicle has room and the provider agrees, and it can lower the haul charge compared with two separate trips. Ask whether each horse will still be cremated individually and how they'll be kept apart and labelled. If the second horse is still alive and just very old, talk to your vet before deciding anything; there's no need to rush that decision.
Does the euthanasia method affect what I can do afterwards?
It can. After a barbiturate euthanasia, a horse carries drug residue, so the body has to go somewhere scavengers can't reach it: deep underground, into a cremation chamber or to an approved processor; drug labels have required that warning since 2003[7]. Some renderers charge more for, or refuse, euthanized horses. If you're set on rendering, ask the renderer before the vet visit.
