Round Lake, Illinois
Horse aftercare in Round Lake: the local picture
Near Round Lake, many horse owners want the ashes back and choose a private cremation, even though it is the costliest route. Where cost matters more, communal cremation, or a renderer's pickup, handles removal without returning anything. Heavier animals and farms farther from the provider pay more, so ask for a total in writing, and clip some mane or save a halter while you still can.
Round Lake's subdivisions leave little space for livestock, but western Lake County and neighboring McHenry County still have horse farms, riding stables and hobby acreages with goats, sheep and alpacas. If your animal is boarded on one of those properties, ask the stable which removal companies have come out before; providers who know the back roads tend to arrive faster.
A compact tractor with a front loader is a great help on a small farm, but many can't lift a full-grown horse, and trying can tip the tractor. Around Round Lake, owners with the right machinery usually drag the body a short distance on a heavy tarp or skid, to where a truck's winch can take over. Ask the provider which they prefer before anyone attempts it.
With roughly 18,526 residents, Round Lake is the 135th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 40 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Round Lake run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Round Lake Beach (3 miles), Grayslake (4 miles) and Mundelein (7 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Round Lake routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

How Illinois thinks about cremation
About 60.2%[1] of people in Illinois are cremated, a share that has climbed for years, while burial still has deep roots here. Horse owners reflect that mix. Some keep their horse at home under a tree on the farm; others choose cremation so their horse can move with them if the land is ever sold. Neither is more proper than the other.
The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Round Lake, not as a count of pets.
How the season changes your options in Round Lake
If your horse is elderly going into winter, it's worth talking to your vet about timing. Some owners choose a calm autumn goodbye rather than risk a crisis in a snowstorm, with roads closed and the ground iron-hard. That's a personal decision with no wrong answer, but it's easier to think through before the first freeze than during it.
Cold slows composting too. A pile built in January may be slow to heat, and it needs a thick base and cover of carbon material to work at all. If you plan to compost a horse on the farm, ask your extension office how to build a winter pile, or arrange a collection instead and leave composting for warmer months.

What horse cremation costs in Round Lake
Why are equine crematories so scarce around Round Lake? Partly because the market is small. By our estimate, if every US horse that died in a year were cremated at the $800 midpoint, total spending would be only about $74 million[5], too little to put a large chamber in every county. That's why the haul so often decides the price.

Setbacks, depth and timing in Illinois
If your horse was put to sleep with a barbiturate, the rules tighten almost everywhere: the body must be buried deeply, cremated or handled through an approved route so wildlife can't reach it. Beyond that, local rules in Illinois decide whether burial or on-farm composting is allowed, and how soon disposal has to happen.
Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Round Lake.
The rules that apply across Illinois (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Illinois page. Round Lake may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day, step by step
- Tell your child plainly and gently, and say "died" or "dead" instead of softer phrases such as "went away" or "put to sleep".
- Let them choose whether to say goodbye, and give them a job if they want one: brushing the mane or picking a ribbon to braid in.
- Save something just for them: a braid of tail, a small shoe, the rosettes from the last show.
- Say goodbye before the truck arrives. It's usually kinder for a child to be away from the yard during loading.
- Plan a small ritual for when the ashes come home, such as scattering a handful in the paddock or planting a shrub.
- Let the pony club, the instructor and the school know, so friends and teachers understand if your child is quiet.
- Leave talk of a new pony aside until your child brings it up.
Memorials at the barn and beyond
Wet ground is common around Round Lake, where lakes, marshes and low-lying pasture hold spring water for weeks. A heavy truck may stall well short of an animal that died in a soft field. Ask the crew whether they can winch the body to firm ground, and clear a path from the road. On a hot day, keep the body shaded and covered.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Round Lake?
Usually yes. Round Lake Beach is about 3 miles away, Grayslake is about 4 miles away and Mundelein is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Round Lake actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 40 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Round Lake and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Round Lake page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Round Lake climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How many horses die each year in the US?
About 92,400 horses per year[7] by our estimate, based on USDA's measured death rate of 1.4%[8] applied to roughly 6.6 million[2] horses. You may see a figure of 900,000 quoted online; it comes from an older estimate and would imply a death rate about ten times what USDA measured. Either way, if you're facing this near Round Lake, you're far from alone.
How big a container do I need for my horse's ashes?
Much bigger than a typical pet urn. A horse returns tens of pounds of cremated remains, so owners often use a wooden chest or a large lidded crock and keep a smaller urn for display. The urn size calculator gives a volume from your horse's weight, and the ashes weight estimator shows the likely range before anything is ordered.
