Horse cremation in St. Augustine

St. Augustine, Florida

What arranging horse cremation near St. Augustine is like

West of the Intracoastal, St. Johns County changes character around Hastings and Elkton, where potato and cabbage fields share the flat land with cattle, horse barns and family acreage. Crews heading out there appreciate specifics: is the animal under a roof or out in a field, how far is it from pavement, and has rain turned the farm lane to soup? A quick photo of the entrance makes planning easier.

Coastal heat and humidity in St. Johns County mean a horse, goat or cow should be collected within hours in summer. Shade matters, air movement matters, and plastic sheeting only traps heat. Nor'easters and hurricanes can close roads across the county, especially near the marshes, so think ahead during storm season and tape the key phone numbers inside a feed-room cabinet.

Burial is still common around towns like St. Augustine, especially where families own their land. It keeps your horse at home, and the cost can be modest if you have access to a backhoe. It also comes with rules on depth, distance from wells and water, and how quickly it must happen. Check them with your county or state agriculture office before anyone starts digging.

St. Augustine is home to about 16,141 people, the 138th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Jacksonville, about 37 miles (59 km) away, which is where some providers serving St. Augustine are based.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Green Cove Springs (23 miles), Ponte Vedra Beach (24 miles) and Palm Coast (25 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

What owners in Florida tend to choose

With about 72.5%[1] of people in Florida cremated, local culture leans strongly toward cremation, and it shows in how animal owners plan. For horses, it tends to mean more owners asking for the ashes back than in places where burial dominates. It doesn't mean more equine crematories, though; those depend on horse numbers, not on human habits, so check the distance before you decide.

That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for St. Augustine only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

What the seasons mean for a horse in St. Augustine

Whatever the season, the rule for a horse is the same: plan for collection within a day. A body of 1,000 lb or more can't be moved indoors or kept cool, and nobody benefits from waiting. Cover the body with a tarp, keep other animals away and make the calls early.

How much to budget, including the haul

Horse cremation costs more for a simple reason: one horse fills most of a large-animal chamber, around 73% of chamber capacity[5] on our estimate, so each horse is cremated on its own. Per pound, that works out at about $0.80/lb[6] at midpoint prices, several times the cost of rendering or composting. Ask any provider serving St. Augustine to list the cremation and the haul separately.

What Florida allows for a horse

Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[8] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[9]. Here's what applies in Florida.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. St. Augustine's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Who to call, and in what order

  1. Tell the clinic right away what you want: a private cremation with the ashes returned, a collector's pickup, or taking your horse home yourself.
  2. Ask how long they can hold your horse, plus whether each day in storage is charged.
  3. Ask staff to save keepsakes for you: some tail, a little mane, the shoes and the halter your horse wore in.
  4. Get the provider's name in writing, whether it's the clinic's usual one or a provider you chose.
  5. Settle who bills you: some clinics add aftercare to their invoice, others leave it between you and the provider.
  6. Arrange where the ashes should go: back to the clinic, to your barn, or delivered to your home.
  7. Collect your tack, rugs and paperwork, or ask the clinic to set them aside for you.

Keeping your horse's memory close to home

Farming families around Hastings and Elkton often view a large animal's death practically, while hobby farmers and horse owners closer to St. Augustine often ask for individual cremation and something to hold. Both are fair choices. Anything you would like kept, from forelock hair to a worn shoe, must be requested before the animal leaves. Get private cremation priced on paper so there are no surprises.

Questions people ask

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the St. Augustine page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from St. Augustine?

Usually yes. Green Cove Springs is about 23 miles away, Ponte Vedra Beach is about 24 miles away and Palm Coast is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Where are the providers that serve St. Augustine actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Jacksonville, about 37 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for St. Augustine and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is horse cremation common in Florida?

For people, about 72.5%[1] of deaths in Florida end in cremation, so the idea is familiar. For horses it's less common than for dogs and cats, because of cost and distance, and many owners choose burial, rendering or composting. Cremation is most common among boarders and owners who want to keep something of their horse.

Can I bury my horse on my own land in Florida?

Often yes, with conditions. Rules usually cover depth, soil cover, distance from wells, streams and property lines, and how quickly burial must happen. National extension guidance suggests a trench about 9 ft deep[9]. Check with your county or the Florida agriculture department before digging, and remember that you can't take a grave with you if you ever sell the land.

How many horses die each year in the US?

About 92,400 horses per year[10] by our estimate, based on USDA's measured death rate of 1.4%[11] applied to roughly 6.6 million[2] horses. You may see a figure of 900,000 quoted online; it comes from an older estimate and would imply a death rate about ten times what USDA measured. Either way, if you're facing this near St. Augustine, you're far from alone.
