Forest City, Florida
Horse aftercare in Forest City: the local picture
Very few horses or livestock live inside Forest City, which is neighborhoods almost end to end. Just west, though, Apopka's plant nurseries give way to rural edges, and horse properties and small farms continue across northwest Orange County and into Lake County. If you stable a horse or raise goats out there, note the gate width, the turning room for a truck, and whether the barn has any rules for outside vehicles.
Many riders from Forest City keep the same horse for ten or fifteen years at barns toward Apopka, and that bond runs deep. When the end comes, individual cremation and a small memento are common requests: a plait of forelock, the halter nameplate, a hind shoe. Say so before the body is moved. Large-animal cremation is priced far above pet cremation, so have the figure confirmed in an email.
Out here, your horse's goodbye might happen in the field where they grazed for twenty years, and that can be a lovely thing. Think about access first, though. A collection truck or a backhoe needs a firm route, a gate wide enough to get through and somewhere to turn. If the field is soft or steep, a spot near the barn or the lane is kinder to everyone on the day.
Forest City's population is around 14,000, the 142nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Forest City run from there.
Families in Forest City often end up using a provider from Lockhart (3 miles), Wekiwa Springs (3 miles) and Apopka (4 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so cremation is an ordinary, familiar choice here. That familiarity carries over to animals, but horses are a special case. A dog's cremation is a quick errand; a horse's involves a large-animal chamber, a winch truck and often a long haul. Plenty of local owners still choose it, especially boarders with no land for burial who want something to bring home.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Forest City, not as a count of pets.
Heat, frost and mud: timing in Forest City
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), schedule a planned euthanasia for early morning. The ground is firmer, the air is cooler, the vet and the driver are fresher, and you're not racing the afternoon heat. Many owners book the truck for the same morning too, so their horse isn't left in a paddock through the hottest part of the day.
Keep other horses away from the body once they've had a few minutes to see it, and keep dogs away altogether. If your horse was put to sleep with a barbiturate, the body stays toxic to scavengers; US drug labels have carried that warning since 2003[5]. In hot weather especially, never leave a horse uncovered overnight while you wait for a truck.

Budgeting for your horse's aftercare near Forest City
Why are equine crematories so scarce around Forest City? Partly because the market is small. By our estimate, if every US horse that died in a year were cremated at the $800 midpoint, total spending would be only about $74 million[6], too little to put a large chamber in every county. That's why the haul so often decides the price.

What Florida allows for a horse
Horses are treated differently from dogs and cats in most places. Burying or disposing of a body this size is usually covered by agricultural or environmental rules, not just pet guidance, and those set depth, distance from water and how quickly it must happen. Cremation itself needs no permit from you; burial, composting and scattering are where local rules come in. Here's what we know for Florida.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Forest City's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- Book the vet and the collection together, ideally early on the same day, so your horse isn't left waiting for hours afterwards.
- Choose the spot with the truck in mind: somewhere flat and solid, close to the gate, the drive or the barn, rather than a boggy corner far from any access.
- Measure the narrowest gate the truck must pass, and note overhanging trees, sharp bends and boggy ground.
- Give your horse a good last morning: time on grass, something tasty, an unhurried brush. If you want photos, take them now.
- Save tail, mane and a shoe before the vet arrives, because it's far easier to do now than with shaking hands afterwards.
- Decide who stays for loading. Many owners say goodbye and step away; a friend or the barn manager can stay with the driver.
- Confirm when and how the ashes come back, plus whether the full amount is returned to you.
Memorials at the barn and beyond
Sudden afternoon storms across the Wekiva side of the metro can put paddocks under inches of water within an hour. If a horse, pony or steer dies during the wet months, explain the footing when you phone, since a truck may need to wait for the ground to firm or use a winch from the lane. Shade the body, leave it uncovered by plastic, and move quickly.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Forest City actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 9 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Forest City and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Forest City?
The closest communities we cover are Lockhart (about 3 miles), Wekiwa Springs (about 3 miles) and Apopka (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Forest City too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Forest City climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Why does the Forest City page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the euthanasia method affect what I can do afterwards?
It can. After a barbiturate euthanasia, a horse carries drug residue, so the body has to go somewhere scavengers can't reach it: deep underground, into a cremation chamber or to an approved processor; drug labels have required that warning since 2003[5]. Some renderers charge more for, or refuse, euthanized horses. If you're set on rendering, ask the renderer before the vet visit.
What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?
A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. Soft pasture, steep slopes, low branches and tight turns cause most of the problems. Measure your narrowest gate and describe ground conditions on the day. Our farm access guide covers the details.
