Horse cremation in Selma

Selma, California

Where horses live around Selma, and why it matters

Selma's young people raise goats, sheep, pigs and steers for the Fresno County fair and school ag programs, and these animals often become family favorites. The child who raised one may need special care after a death. Let them choose what to keep, perhaps the show halter, a fair ribbon or a photo from the sale ring, and talk honestly about what happened.

Summer heat in Selma can reach 100 degrees, so a large animal lost in July or August needs arrangements within hours. Winter brings the opposite challenge, with fog and soft ground slowing access to back pastures. Plan ahead: agree on the gate a driver should use, who can meet them with keys and whether the family leans toward a private cremation, a communal one or simple removal.

In farm country around Selma, the knacker or dead-stock hauler your family used for decades may have retired, sold up or stopped taking horses. Before you rely on an old number pinned by the barn phone, ring it on a quiet afternoon and check that it still works, what they charge now and whether they come out on weekends. A plan with a dead number in it isn't a plan.

Selma's population is around 24,702, the 244th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Fresno, roughly 15 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Selma run from there.

Families in Selma often end up using a provider from Reedley (9 miles), Sanger (9 miles) and Dinuba (12 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

70.5%[2]

The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.

6.6 million[3]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[4]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[5]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are American Horse Council and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial

Cremation is the usual choice for people in California, where about 70.5%[2] are cremated, and you'll hear it discussed openly at the barn. Even so, many horse owners here weigh it against burial, rendering and composting on cost alone, and that's a fair thing to do. US extension figures put cremating a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[4], several times the cost of the other routes.

That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Selma only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Planning around the Selma calendar

In the hottest months (June, July, August and September), schedule a planned euthanasia for early morning. The ground is firmer, the air is cooler, the vet and the driver are fresher, and you're not racing the afternoon heat. Many owners book the truck for the same morning too, so their horse isn't left in a paddock through the hottest part of the day.

Keep a spare tarp, an old halter you don't mind parting with and the numbers of your vet and one collection service on a card in the barn office. In a Selma summer, when highs sit around 98°F, you don't want to lose an hour hunting for any of them while the day warms up.

What horse cremation costs in Selma

The headline price is rarely the whole bill. Watch for the vet's farm call and euthanasia, weekend or after-hours collection, a tractor or skid-steer fee at a boarding barn, a larger urn or chest, and at renderers, possible surcharges for horses that were put to sleep[6]. In Minnesota, the University of Minnesota reported rendering at $150+[7] per pickup (UMN Extension), above the national low end.

Setbacks, depth and timing in California

Composting is where local rules differ most. Some places encourage on-farm composting of large animals; California, for example, prohibits composting unprocessed mammal carcasses (UC ANR). Check with the agriculture department or council covering California before a pile goes in, even if a neighbor tells you it's fine.

The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Selma's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A plan you can leave at the barn

  1. Let the other horses see the body briefly; owners often say survivors calm down more quickly when they have.
  2. Don't leave a lone survivor for long. Left alone without warning, a horse can fret, whinny for hours or go through a fence, so bring in a companion on loan where possible.
  3. Keep the remaining horses well away while the body is winched aboard, preferably stabled with the doors closed.
  4. If two elderly horses are near the end together, ask whether one trip can collect both, which may lower the haul charge.
  5. Confirm each horse is cremated separately with its name on its own tag, so the two sets of ashes can't be confused.
  6. Watch the survivor's eating, drinking and droppings closely for several days, and ring the vet at the first sign of something different.

Remembering your horse in Selma

Vineyards dominate the land around Selma, but many rural properties also keep a few head of beef cattle, along with horses, pigs, sheep or goats. For a large animal, the first practical concern after a death is access: can a truck get between vine rows or across an irrigated field without getting stuck? Share clear directions, a rough weight and any ditch crossings when you contact a provider.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Selma?

The closest communities we cover are Reedley (about 9 miles), Sanger (about 9 miles) and Dinuba (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Selma too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in California?

For people, yes: about 70.5%[2] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Selma follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How does Selma's weather affect horse aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Selma, with average highs around 98°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Where are the providers that serve Selma actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Fresno, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Selma and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?

A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. Soft pasture, steep slopes, low branches and tight turns cause most of the problems. Measure your narrowest gate and describe ground conditions on the day. Our farm access guide covers the details.

Should I plan ahead if my horse is getting old?

Yes, quietly. Horses aged 20 and over have the highest yearly death rate in USDA data, 3.1%[8], and a plan made in calm conditions is kinder than one made in a crisis. Choose a provider, check access to the barn, note your budget and keepsake wishes, and leave a copy with whoever looks after your horse day to day.
