With about 70.5%[1] of people in California cremated, local culture leans strongly toward cremation, and it shows in how animal owners plan. For horses, it tends to mean more owners asking for the ashes back than in places where burial dominates. It doesn't mean more equine crematories, though; those depend on horse numbers, not on human habits, so check the distance before you decide.

Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[7] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[8]. Does the Aptos climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 77°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
