El Mirage, Arizona
Finding horse aftercare that reaches El Mirage
Families near El Mirage who keep horses often trailer out to ride in the White Tank foothills or along the Agua Fria when the weather cools. Many also raise 4-H lambs, goats and steers with their children. It helps to plan before a loss, especially with an older horse: in winter, find out which West Valley providers reach your property and what they charge.
El Mirage began as a settlement for farmworkers in the 1930s, and while fields have given way to subdivisions, horse properties and small livestock remain in the older parts of the West Valley and toward Wittmann and Waddell. When a large animal dies nearby, tell a provider whether it is in a backyard corral, a barn or open pasture, and how close a truck can reach.
In a place the size of El Mirage, horse aftercare is usually arranged through the local large-animal vet, who knows which haulers and crematories actually come out this far. The nearest equine chamber may be a long drive away, perhaps near a larger center such as Peoria, so collection can cost as much as a big share of the cremation. Ask for the haul and the cremation priced as separate lines.
With roughly 35,820 residents, El Mirage is the 27th-largest of the 29 Arizona communities we cover. Peoria, roughly 5 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover El Mirage run from there.
Our pages for Surprise (4 miles, a larger centre), Peoria (5 miles, a larger centre) and Glendale (9 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers El Mirage as well.

How Arizona thinks about cremation
In Arizona, about 80.7%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Families here rarely need convincing that cremation is a dignified choice. For a horse, the harder questions are practical: is there an equine-capable chamber within reach, what will the haul cost, and would you rather scatter the ashes over a favorite field or keep a small urn in the tack room?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Arizona figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in El Mirage tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather, ground and truck access in El Mirage
Keep a spare tarp, an old halter you don't mind parting with and the numbers of your vet and one collection service on a card in the barn office. In an El Mirage summer, when highs sit around 105°F, you don't want to lose an hour hunting for any of them while the day warms up.
Heat narrows your choices around El Mirage. Burial needs a backhoe on site quickly, and a renderer or crematory may not manage a same-afternoon collection in peak season. If your horse is old or unwell going into July, make the calls now: who would come, how fast, and what they'd charge on a weekend.

Horse aftercare prices for El Mirage owners
Burial isn't always the cheapest route. Renting a backhoe has been reported at $250-$500[5], which is less than cremation but more than a rendering pickup, and it assumes you own suitable land. Composting a 1,200 lb horse was estimated at $170-$380[6] in materials, equipment and labor. Each route suits a different situation, and the table sets them side by side.

Rules worth knowing in Arizona
Paperwork matters too. In the UK and much of Europe, a horse's passport has to be returned to the organization that issued it after death, and collectors may ask to see it. In the US, a vet's note of the date and cause of death helps if an insurer, a renderer or a landfill asks. Keep those papers with your plan. Here are the local notes for Arizona.
The official Arizona local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in El Mirage.
We keep Arizona's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Arizona rules summary. Before a home burial in El Mirage, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Who to call, and in what order
- Let the other horses see the body for a few minutes; many owners find companions settle sooner afterwards.
- Don't leave a lone survivor for long. Left alone without warning, a horse can fret, whinny for hours or go through a fence, so bring in a companion on loan where possible.
- Keep the remaining horses well away while the body is winched aboard, preferably stabled with the doors closed.
- If two elderly horses are near the end together, find out if one run can take both, since that can cut the transport cost.
- Confirm each horse is cremated separately and labelled with its own name, so the ashes can't be mixed.
- Watch the survivor's eating, drinking and droppings closely for several days, and ring the vet at the first sign of something different.
Ashes, keepsakes and a place to visit
Burying a horse or goat on a West Valley lot around El Mirage is usually ruled out by caliche, close neighbors and local rules. Cremation or removal is the common answer. In summer, a large body cannot wait, so ask how soon someone can come and ask for a single total that covers pickup and cremation, so there are no surprises later.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from El Mirage?
Usually yes. Surprise is about 4 miles away, Peoria is about 5 miles away and Glendale is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Peoria to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Peoria (roughly 5 miles from El Mirage) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in El Mirage?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 105°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do Arizona attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Arizona human cremation rate at about 80.7%[1]. We show it on the El Mirage page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How is a horse that died in a stall moved out?
Usually with straps and the truck's winch, drawing the body along the aisle and out of the door onto the truck bed. It takes time, and doorways and tight turns can make it harder. Tell the provider the width of the stall door and the aisle when you call. If you're planning a goodbye, choose a spot outside where the truck can reach easily.
Should I plan ahead if my horse is getting old?
Yes, quietly. Horses aged 20 and over have the highest yearly death rate in USDA data, 3.1%[8], and a plan made in calm conditions is kinder than one made in a crisis. Choose a provider, check access to the barn, note your budget and keepsake wishes, and leave a copy with whoever looks after your horse day to day.
