Horse aftercare near Eindhoven: cremation, burial and more

Eindhoven, North Brabant

Barns, farms and distance around Eindhoven

Brabant's wet winters leave pastures and tracks soft, which makes moving a horse or cow harder. In summer, speed matters more. For a family horse, pony, donkey, pet pig or goat, ask whether individual cremation with ashes returned is available, how collection from your property works and what the total cost will be. Ask, too, how far a provider will travel into the Kempen or De Peel.

North Brabant is one of the Netherlands' main farming provinces, with pig, dairy and poultry farms and plenty of horses and ponies in the countryside around Eindhoven. When a large animal dies on a farm or at a stable, tell a provider about yard access and ground conditions. Commercial livestock follows established collection channels; family horses and pets need a different arrangement.

If your horse came from a rescue, a retirement farm or a breed society near Eindhoven, it's worth telling them. Many rescues keep a close interest in the horses they placed and some have arrangements with local vets or haulers. A few veterinary schools also accept horses for teaching or research and arrange collection, though the ashes are not usually returned. Ask your vet whether that option exists nearby.

About 231,000 people live in Eindhoven. Some of the providers who serve Eindhoven are based about 47 miles away in Utrecht, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

If you want to compare providers, look at Utrecht (47 miles), Rotterdam (54 miles, a larger centre) and The Hague (66 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).

6.6 million[2]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[3]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and American Horse Council.

How Netherlands thinks about cremation

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Netherlands, at about 68.37%[1], but family land and farm burial are still part of local life. For horse owners, that often turns the decision into a question about the property: will you keep it, do the rules allow burial, and can machinery get to the spot you'd choose?

The Netherlands percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Eindhoven, not as a count of pets.

How the season changes your options in Eindhoven

If your horse dies late in the evening, it's usually safer to cover the body and arrange collection for first light than to load in the dark. Drivers work more safely in daylight, the air is cooler overnight and you'll have had a few hours to gather yourself. Keep other animals away from the body until the morning.

How much to budget, including the haul

In Eindhoven, your equine vet is the best first contact. They'll know whether your horse falls under pet or livestock rules, which collection or rendering service operates locally and which crematoria accept a whole horse. Ask each provider for the price of individual cremation for your horse's weight, collection from your yard and the return of the ashes.

Paperwork and permission in North Brabant

Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[6] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[7]. Here's what applies in North Brabant.

In the Netherlands, the NVWA treats horses as hobby animals rather than household pets for disposal purposes, so the rules differ from those for dogs and cats. If you want your horse's ashes back, ask your vet for a crematorium that accepts horses individually. Cremation in another EU country needs the destination country's permission, which matters near a border.

Step by step, from the field to the urn

  1. Check from a distance first if you find your horse down in the morning. Look for breathing before you go near the legs.
  2. Call the vet even when death is obvious. An unexplained death may be worth a post-mortem, and your vet can say whether it is.
  3. Ring your insurer before the body leaves, assuming your horse was covered for mortality. Plenty of policies require notice in advance and can insist on an examination.
  4. Take a few photos of where and how you found your horse, for the vet and any insurer, then cover the body.
  5. Move the other horses to a stable or far field once they've spent a few minutes with their companion.
  6. Ask how a post-mortem affects getting the ashes back, since a diagnostic lab may arrange disposal on its own.
  7. Book collection after you've settled those questions, and describe exactly how the driver reaches the body.

Ways to keep your horse close

Many families around Eindhoven keep a horse or pony at a pension stable or a farm, sometimes for decades. If your animal is growing old, it helps to plan ahead. Talk to the stable about what happens if your horse dies there, find out which providers serve the area, and know whether ashes can be returned, so nothing has to be rushed.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Eindhoven actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Utrecht, about 47 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Eindhoven and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Eindhoven?

Usually yes. Utrecht is about 47 miles away, Rotterdam is about 54 miles away and The Hague is about 66 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Netherlands attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Netherlands human cremation rate at about 68.37%[1]. We show it on the Eindhoven page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Is there a horse crematory near Eindhoven?

There may not be one close by. Large-animal chambers are expensive to build and run, so they cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy, and owners near Eindhoven often deal with a provider an hour or more away. Some run collection routes on set days. Tell us your address and we'll look for equine-capable providers that reach you, including any across a county or state line.

Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?

Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.

How long until I get my horse's ashes back?

Longer than for a small pet. The burn phase alone takes at least 4.4 hours[8] for an 1,100 lb horse on our estimate, followed by a long cool-down and processing. Around Eindhoven, distance and scheduled delivery routes add time too. Ask for an expected return date and whether the ashes will be delivered or need collecting.
