Saying goodbye to your horse in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, South Holland

Where horses live around Rotterdam, and why it matters

Dutch families often keep horses, sheep and goats for many years, and children's farms and sanctuaries have animals that whole neighborhoods know by name. When cremation isn't possible, a braid of mane, a bell, a halter or some wool can be kept. A tree on the dike or a small stone near the stable gives a place to remember. A framed photo of the animal in the pasture completes it.

Around Rotterdam, the polders of the Hoeksche Waard, Voorne-Putten and the Krimpenerwaard are dairy country, sheep graze the dikes, and horses and goats live on smallholdings. Inside the city, children's farms keep goats, sheep, pigs and ponies, and the zoo cares for large species. After a death, the farm or vet usually arranges collection; individual cremation for large animals is available in the Netherlands but limited.

Many horses in the Rotterdam area belong to people who drive out to ride a few times a week. If that's you, make sure someone at the barn has your written permission to call the vet and the collection service if you can't be reached. A signed note with your preferred provider, your budget and whether you want the tail saved takes ten minutes and spares everyone a painful chain of phone calls.

About 651,000 people live in Rotterdam, which makes it the largest of the 2 South Holland communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are The Hague (13 miles), Utrecht (30 miles) and Haarlem (32 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Rotterdam too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What owners in Netherlands tend to choose

With cremation at about 68.37%[1] for people in Netherlands and burial still common, many families here have sat through both kinds of service. That familiarity makes a small ceremony for a horse feel natural: a few words at the paddock gate, a ride past by friends, a favorite song. It can happen before collection or months later with the ashes.

The Netherlands percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Rotterdam, not as a count of pets.

What the seasons mean for a horse in Rotterdam

Weather affects two things for horse owners in Rotterdam: how quickly the body must be moved, and whether a truck or backhoe can reach it. Heat shortens the time; rain and snow soften or block the route. Your provider will know local conditions well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

What horse cremation costs in Rotterdam

In some European countries, part of the collection fee for a fallen animal is paid by a regional fund or animal-health scheme, while individual cremation is always paid privately. Ask your vet near Rotterdam whether any such scheme covers horses where you live, and ask each provider for collection and cremation as separate lines.

Rules worth knowing in South Holland

Many owners assume that because it's their land, they can do what they like for their horse. Usually they can, within limits. In South Holland those limits typically cover burial depth, distance from water and wells, and timing. Renting or boarding changes things again, because the landowner's permission comes first.

In the Netherlands, the NVWA treats horses as hobby animals rather than household pets for disposal purposes, so the rules differ from those for dogs and cats. If you want your horse's ashes back, ask your vet for a crematorium that accepts horses individually. Cremation in another EU country needs the destination country's permission, which matters near a border.

Step by step, from the field to the urn

  1. Decide what you want back: the ashes, a grave on your land, or only a braid and a shoe. Answering that cuts the list right down.
  2. Check what exists near you: an equine crematory, a renderer or fallen-stock collector, a backhoe operator, or room to compost.
  3. Check the rules for burial or composting on your land with the county, state or council before you commit.
  4. Get two written quotes for your chosen route, both covering pickup from where the horse is.
  5. Ask the hard questions: is the cremation individual, how is my horse identified, and do I get all of the ashes back?
  6. Take keepsakes before collection, whichever route you choose.
  7. Plan for the ashes: a horse returns roughly 33 to 55 lb, far more than a standard urn holds.

Tail braids, shoes and scattering the ashes

Polder land stays soft through most seasons, and water-filled ditches line every pasture, so reaching a large animal with a heavy vehicle can be tricky. When you call about collection, describe the access road, the ditches and bridges, and whether a lorry with a crane can reach the stable or field. In summer, move quickly; in winter, frost can actually firm the ground.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Netherlands?

For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rotterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rotterdam?

Usually yes. The Hague is about 13 miles away, Utrecht is about 30 miles away and Haarlem is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Should I be there when my horse is loaded onto the truck?

You can, but many owners choose not to. Loading uses a winch and takes a few minutes, and it can be hard to watch. A common approach is to say goodbye, cover your horse, then let a friend or the barn manager stay with the driver. If you do want to be there, tell the provider beforehand and they'll talk you through what happens.

Will I get all of my horse's ashes back?

Ask, because practices differ. A horse's cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so an 1,100 lb horse leaves around 33 to 55 lb. Some providers return everything; others return a set portion and scatter the rest. Get the answer in writing, along with how your horse is identified from collection to return.

My horse is at a boarding barn near Rotterdam. Who decides what happens?

You do, as the owner, but the barn owner controls the property. They'll have a say on where euthanasia happens, whether their tractor or skid steer can help, and how quickly the body must leave. Many suburban barns won't allow burial on site. Talk to the barn manager early and leave written instructions with the office.

Will my boarding barn charge me when my horse dies?

Some do. Barns may charge for tractor or skid-steer help, for staff time on a weekend, or for any days a stall is held. Check your boarding contract, and ask the barn manager what they'd normally bill so there are no surprises. Many barns near Rotterdam waive small charges at a hard time, but it's better to know than to guess.
