How Italy thinks about cremation
Where cremation is the exception, at about 38.16%[1] for people in Italy, burial can feel like the natural choice even when your land says otherwise: a well close by, rock just under the topsoil, or a high water table. If that's you, composting is the nearest thing to keeping your horse on the farm. It needs space and wood chips rather than a deep hole, and the finished compost stays with the land.

Rules worth knowing in Liguria
Many owners assume that because it's their land, they can do what they like for their horse. Usually they can, within limits. In Liguria those limits typically cover burial depth, distance from water and wells, and timing. Renting or boarding changes things again, because the landowner's permission comes first.
If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- Book the vet and the collection together, ideally early on the same day, so your horse isn't left waiting for hours afterwards.
- Choose the spot with the truck in mind: somewhere flat and solid, close to the gate, the drive or the barn, rather than a boggy corner far from any access.
- Measure the narrowest gate the truck must pass, and note overhanging trees, sharp bends and boggy ground.
- Give your horse a good last morning: grass, a favorite treat, a long groom. Take photos if you'd like them.
- Save tail, mane and a shoe before the vet arrives, while you're calm and your hands are steady.
- Decide who stays for loading. Plenty of owners choose to leave once they've said goodbye, and hand over to a friend or the yard manager while the driver works.
- Confirm when and how the ashes come back, plus whether the full amount is returned to you.

How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Genoa page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Genoa?
Usually yes. Portofino is about 15 miles away, Milan is about 74 miles away and Turin is about 77 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?
Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.
What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?
A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. How much does horse cremation cost in Genoa?
We haven't found published horse cremation prices for Italy, so the honest answer is to ask for a written quote. As a reference, US extension figures put cremation of a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[3] before transport. Collection distance, your horse's weight and out-of-hours calls drive the total, so ask for those lines separately and check that the cremation is individual.
How is a horse that died in a stall moved out?
Usually with straps and the truck's winch, drawing the body along the aisle and out of the door onto the truck bed. It takes time, and doorways and tight turns can make it harder. Tell the provider the width of the stall door and the aisle when you call. If you're planning a goodbye, choose a spot outside where the truck can reach easily.
