Barns, farms and distance around Turin
Farm and stable families around Turin often want a lasting reminder even when a whole-animal cremation is too costly. The bell a cow wore on the summer alpine pastures, a braid of mane, a clip of wool, an ear tag or a halter are the kinds of things people keep, and hair can be set in resin or worked into jewellery by a craftsperson. Set aside what you want while the animal is still at home.
The Alpine valleys west of Turin and the hills of the Langhe and Monferrato to the south have steep, narrow roads that can make moving a heavy animal difficult, especially after winter snow or in the autumn rains. Before collection, check whether a truck can reach the barn and whether there is firm, level ground for loading, and describe the route clearly, including any hairpin bends or low bridges a large vehicle would meet.
Barns on the edge of a metro the size of Turin often have houses, cul-de-sacs and a busy road on at least one side. Loading a horse is not something neighbors or passing children need to watch. Ask the provider to park behind the barn or indoor arena if there's room, keep a large tarp ready, and pick a quiet hour. Most drivers are used to being discreet and will welcome the request.
About 886,000 people live in Turin.
Families in Turin often end up using a provider from Genoa (77 miles), Milan (78 miles) and Como (85 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

How Italy thinks about cremation
Burial is the familiar choice in Italy, where only about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated. If you're the first in your circle to ask about cremating a horse, you may get a few raised eyebrows at the barn. That's fine. Plenty of owners choose it because they rent or board, or simply want something to scatter over the field where their horse grew old.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Italy figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Turin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Turin weather and your horse's aftercare
If your horse dies late in the evening, it's usually safer to cover the body and arrange collection for first light than to load in the dark. Drivers work more safely in daylight, the air is cooler overnight and you'll have had a few hours to gather yourself. Keep other animals away from the body until the morning.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs
European quotes tend to be given per kilogram or by weight band, which makes US figures awkward to compare. As a rough conversion, the US midpoint of about $0.80/lb[5] works out at roughly $1.75 per kilogram by our estimate. For a 500 kg horse near Turin, treat that as a sense check on any quote, nothing more.
The Piedmont price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Before anyone digs: the rules in Piedmont
Moving a horse's body along a public road can fall under animal by-product or transport rules, which is one reason licensed collectors do most of this work. If you plan to trailer your horse to a provider yourself, ask the provider and the agriculture office in Piedmont whether you need anything in writing first. Cremation itself asks nothing of you.
The first day, step by step
- Call the barn manager first if your horse is boarded. They control the gates, the machinery and where a truck can park.
- Check the barn's rules on where euthanasia can happen and how quickly a body must leave the property.
- Agree who pays for what: the vet, any tractor or skid-steer help from the barn, and the collection.
- Contact an equine-capable provider, or ask us to find local options, and give them the barn's exact address.
- Pick a time when other boarders' horses can be brought in and the aisle cleared.
- Leave a note at the barn office saying who is collecting, when they're expected and how to reach you by phone.
Keeping your horse's memory close to home
Piedmont is farming country, known for the white Piedmontese cattle raised on the plains and in the hills, with dairy herds, sheep and goats on the alpine pastures in summer, and horses at riding centres around Turin. A large animal that dies in the province is usually collected by a regional service licensed for animal by-products. Ask whether individual cremation with ashes returned is possible for an animal that size, or whether the only route is disposal.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Turin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Turin?
Usually yes. Genoa is about 77 miles away, Milan is about 78 miles away and Como is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My horse is at a boarding barn near Turin. Who decides what happens?
You do, as the owner, but the barn owner controls the property. They'll have a say on where euthanasia happens, whether their tractor or skid steer can help, and how quickly the body must leave. Many suburban barns won't allow burial on site. Talk to the barn manager early and leave written instructions with the office.
Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?
Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.
Can I keep my horse's tail or a shoe?
Yes, and it's worth doing before collection. Tie a length of tail tightly at the top, then cut above the tie from underneath, where it won't show, so the hair stays together. Save a lock of mane too if you'd like, and pull a shoe or ask your farrier to. Our mane and tail guide explains how to clean and store hair.
Do equine hospitals near Turin arrange cremation?
Many do. If your horse dies or is put to sleep at a referral clinic, staff can usually call their regular provider and hold your horse for a short time. You can still choose a different crematory or collector; just say so quickly, because clinics can't keep a horse for long. Ask for the provider's name and the price in writing.
