Arranging horse cremation near Antwerp

Antwerp, Flanders

How equine cremation works for Antwerp owners

In Flanders, dead horses and farm animals are normally collected through the official rendering system, which your vet can explain and help arrange. An individual cremation, with that animal's ashes returned to you, is also possible for large animals, though only some providers offer it and transport from the stable adds to the cost. Ask for an itemised price in writing before agreeing.

Antwerp itself is a port city with very few large animals, but its hinterland is different. To the east, the Kempen has sandy heathland, pine woods and a strong horse culture with many riding stables and breeders, and the polders north towards the Dutch border are grazing and farmland. If you keep horses, ponies, sheep or goats in the province, have the animal's weight and yard access ready when you ask for options.

Plenty of horses around Antwerp aren't owned outright. They're leased, part-boarded, shared with a friend or belong to a lesson program where you ride twice a week. If that's your situation, find out now who has the final say when the horse dies and who pays for aftercare. A lesson barn usually handles it; a lease agreement may put the decision and the bill on you.

Antwerp is home to about 523,000 people, the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

67.98%[1]

In 2023, 67.98% of deaths in Belgium were cremated (21 crematoria).

6.6 million[2]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[3]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation in Belgium, and where horses fit

With cremation at about 67.98%[1] for people in Belgium and burial still common, many families here have sat through both kinds of service. That familiarity makes a small ceremony for a horse feel natural: a few words at the paddock gate, a ride past by friends, a favorite song. It can happen before collection or months later with the ashes.

That Belgium rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Antwerp only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Heat, frost and mud: timing in Antwerp

Weather affects two things for horse owners in Antwerp: how quickly the body must be moved, and whether a truck or backhoe can reach it. Heat shortens the time; rain and snow soften or block the route. Your provider will know local conditions well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs

Published horse cremation prices are hard to find in Europe, and we'd rather say so than invent them. Many countries handle horses under different rules from dogs and cats, and individual equine cremation is offered by fewer providers than pet cremation. The table shows US extension figures in US dollars as a reference point for what the service involves; ask for a local quote in euros.

We keep the detailed Flanders price table on one page so it stays current: see Flanders prices.

Before anyone digs: the rules in Flanders

Paperwork matters too. In the UK and much of Europe, a horse's passport has to be returned to the organization that issued it after death, and collectors may ask to see it. In the US, a vet's note of the date and cause of death helps if an insurer, a renderer or a landfill asks. Keep those papers with your plan. Here are the local notes for Flanders.

The first day, step by step

  1. Tell the clinic right away what you want: individual cremation with ashes, a collection service, or bringing your horse home.
  2. Ask how long they can hold your horse and whether there's a daily storage charge.
  3. Ask staff to save keepsakes for you: some tail, a little mane, the shoes and the halter your horse wore in.
  4. Get the provider's name in writing, no matter if the clinic picked their regular company or you named one yourself.
  5. Settle who bills you: some clinics add aftercare to their invoice, others leave it between you and the provider.
  6. Arrange where the ashes should go: back to the clinic, to your barn, or delivered to your home.
  7. Collect your tack, rugs and paperwork yourself, or have the clinic keep them safe until you can come back.

Tail braids, shoes and scattering the ashes

Flemish winters bring long spells of rain, and fields in the Kempen and the polders can stay waterlogged for weeks. A heavy vehicle may not reach a pasture, so stable owners often plan where an older horse could be moved onto a yard or hard path. Agreeing on those details with your vet while the animal is still comfortable spares everyone rushed decisions later.

Every option Antwerp families choose between is on the services page, there are guides for the big decisions and articles for the details, or compare your instinct with the poll results, the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures. If you live between Antwerp and Ghent, either page applies. Every other community in Flanders, and all of Belgium, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Antwerp?

The closest communities we cover are Brussels (about 26 miles) and Ghent (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Antwerp too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Why does the Antwerp page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Do I need to return my horse's passport after it dies?

Yes. In the UK and across the EU, a horse's passport must go back to its issuing body once the horse has died, and it's worth doing promptly. The collector or crematorium may want to check it when they arrive, so keep it with your plan. Some issuing bodies will stamp and return the passport as a keepsake if you ask.

How is a horse that died in a stall moved out?

Usually with straps and the truck's winch, drawing the body along the aisle and out of the door onto the truck bed. It takes time, and doorways and tight turns can make it harder. Tell the provider the width of the stall door and the aisle when you call. If you're planning a goodbye, choose a spot outside where the truck can reach easily.

My horse is at a boarding barn near Antwerp. Who decides what happens?

You do, as the owner, but the barn owner controls the property. They'll have a say on where euthanasia happens, whether their tractor or skid steer can help, and how quickly the body must leave. Many suburban barns won't allow burial on site. Talk to the barn manager early and leave written instructions with the office.

What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?

A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. Soft pasture, steep slopes, low branches and tight turns cause most of the problems. Measure your narrowest gate and describe ground conditions on the day. Our farm access guide covers the details.
