Horse aftercare near Brussels: cremation, burial and more

Brussels, Brussels-Capital

What arranging horse cremation near Brussels is like

Belgium has deep farming roots, from heavy draught horses to Belgian Blue cattle, and owners around Brussels often want a lasting reminder even when individual cremation of a large animal is not practical. A length of mane or tail, a cow's bell or ear tag, a clip of wool or a head collar can become a keepsake. Ask whether a partial return of ashes or a hoof print is possible, and take anything you want before collection.

The farmland and woods around Brussels stay soft and wet for much of the year, which affects how a heavy animal is moved. Check whether a lorry can reach the stable or barn, how wide the gates are, and whether a tractor or winch is available. Wet ground and narrow lanes in Brabant can add time and cost, so mention them when you ask for a quote, along with the animal's approximate weight.

Few horses live inside Brussels itself. Most are kept at boarding stables, riding schools and small acreages on the edge of the metro, and that's where aftercare starts. The pet crematories you'll find in town are built for dogs and cats, so they can't take a full-size horse. The providers who can are usually out in farm country, sometimes an hour or more beyond the city limits, and they'll quote collection from the barn's address, not from your home.

Brussels is home to about 1,209,000 people.

Our pages for Antwerp (26 miles) and Ghent (31 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Brussels as well.

Farm burial, cremation and local habits

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Belgium, at about 67.98%[1], but family land and farm burial are still part of local life. For horse owners, that often turns the decision into a question about the property: will you keep it, do the rules allow burial, and can machinery get to the spot you'd choose?

That Belgium rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Brussels only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

How the season changes your options in Brussels

If you can plan the goodbye, choose a dry day and an early hour. Firm ground and cool air make everything easier: for the vet, for the collection driver and for you. A spot near a gate or the barn aisle is usually better than a distant field.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs

In much of Europe, a fallen horse can be collected by a regional rendering or carcass-disposal service at modest cost, while individual cremation with ashes returned costs considerably more. Give providers your horse's approximate weight in kilograms and the address of the yard, and ask what's included before you compare.

What Brussels-Capital allows for a horse

Horses are treated differently from dogs and cats in most places. Burying or disposing of a body this size is usually covered by agricultural or environmental rules, not just pet guidance, and those set depth, distance from water and how quickly it must happen. Cremation itself needs no permit from you; burial, composting and scattering are where local rules come in. Here's what we know for Brussels-Capital.

If it happened tomorrow: a checklist

  1. Book the vet and the collection together, aiming for a morning slot on one day, so there's no long gap between the euthanasia and the pickup.
  2. Choose the spot with the truck in mind: level, firm ground near a gate, the lane or the barn, never the far corner of a wet field.
  3. Measure the narrowest gate on the route and note any low branches, tight turns or soft patches.
  4. Give your horse a good last morning: grass, a favorite treat, a long groom. Take photos if you'd like them.
  5. Save tail, mane and a shoe before the vet arrives, while you're calm and your hands are steady.
  6. Decide who stays for loading. Plenty of owners choose to leave once they've said goodbye, and hand over to a friend or the yard manager while the driver works.
  7. Confirm when and how the ashes come back, plus whether the full amount is returned to you.

Memorials at the barn and beyond

There are almost no large animals inside the Brussels-Capital Region, but horses, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs are common just beyond it in Flemish and Walloon Brabant, where riding stables, dairy farms and hobby farms sit between villages, and care farms and sanctuaries keep donkeys and rescued livestock. The aftercare for any of them will be handled by a regional collection or cremation service rather than anything in the city itself, so ask how far they travel.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brussels?

Usually yes. Antwerp is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 31 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. We show it on the Brussels page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Should I be there when my horse is loaded onto the truck?

You can, but many owners choose not to. Loading uses a winch and takes a few minutes, and it can be hard to watch. A common approach is to say goodbye, cover your horse, then let a friend or the barn manager stay with the driver. If you do want to be there, tell the provider beforehand and they'll talk you through what happens.

My horse is at a boarding barn near Brussels. Who decides what happens?

You do, as the owner, but the barn owner controls the property. They'll have a say on where euthanasia happens, whether their tractor or skid steer can help, and how quickly the body must leave. Many suburban barns won't allow burial on site. Talk to the barn manager early and leave written instructions with the office.

How much does horse cremation cost in Brussels?

We haven't found published horse cremation prices for Belgium, so the honest answer is to ask for a written quote. As a reference, US extension figures put cremation of a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[3] before transport. Collection distance, your horse's weight and out-of-hours calls drive the total, so ask for those lines separately and check that the cremation is individual.

Should I plan ahead if my horse is getting old?

Yes, quietly. Horses aged 20 and over have the highest yearly death rate in USDA data, 3.1%[6], and a plan made in calm conditions is kinder than one made in a crisis. Choose a provider, check access to the barn, note your budget and keepsake wishes, and leave a copy with whoever looks after your horse day to day.
