Orland Park, Illinois
How equine cremation works for Orland Park owners
For families who ride or keep small livestock near Orland Park, losing an animal often means losing a daily routine of feeding, grooming and mucking out. Private cremation of a horse is expensive but possible; group cremation and rendering are cheaper. Ask for itemized prices, and set aside keepsakes such as a halter, a show ribbon or a length of mane before collection.
Southwest suburban winters can ice over barn lanes and pastures, while spring rain leaves paddocks soft. A July death in an open pasture needs a same-day response. Shade the body, move other animals away, and describe gates, fences and ground conditions when you call, so the service arrives with the right vehicle and a winch if needed. Photos of the site help.
If your horse has been referred to an equine hospital near Chicago and dies there, arranging aftercare from the clinic is often simpler and cheaper than bringing your horse back to a farm near Orland Park. The clinic has the loading area and the contacts. If burial at home really matters to you, say so at once, and ask what the trip back and a backhoe would add.
With roughly 57,954 residents, Orland Park is the 21st-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Orland Park run from there.
Our pages for Tinley Park (4 miles), Homer Glen (5 miles) and Oak Forest (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Orland Park as well.
60.2%[1]
The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.
6.6 million[2]
There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.
$600-$1,000[3]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are American Horse Council and Embrace Pet Insurance.

What owners in Illinois tend to choose
Cremation is common in Illinois, at about 60.2%[1], and so is burial, which leaves room for a middle route: a pet cemetery that accepts large animals. Few do, and a horse-sized plot costs far more than one for a dog, but it gives owners without land a grave they can visit. Ask about access, maintenance and what happens if the cemetery ever closes.
That Illinois rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Orland Park only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, ground and truck access in Orland Park
If your horse is elderly going into winter, it's worth talking to your vet about timing. Some owners choose a calm autumn goodbye rather than risk a crisis in a snowstorm, with roads closed and the ground iron-hard. That's a personal decision with no wrong answer, but it's easier to think through before the first freeze than during it.
Cold slows composting too. A pile built in January may be slow to heat, and it needs a thick base and cover of carbon material to work at all. If you plan to compost a horse on the farm, ask your extension office how to build a winter pile, or arrange a collection instead and leave composting for warmer months.

What horse cremation costs in Orland Park
Budget for three things: the vet's euthanasia visit, collection from the farm or barn, and the aftercare itself. Rendering pickup is typically $75-$200[5], while cremation runs several hundred dollars more. If the nearest crematory is a long drive away, the haul can move the total a long way, so ask whether they run scheduled routes through your area.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Paperwork and permission in Illinois
If your horse was put to sleep with a barbiturate, the rules tighten almost everywhere: the body must be buried deeply, cremated or handled through an approved route so wildlife can't reach it. Beyond that, local rules in Illinois decide whether burial or on-farm composting is allowed, and how soon disposal has to happen.

A plan you can leave at the barn
- Tell the clinic right away what you want: individual cremation with ashes, a collection service, or bringing your horse home.
- Ask how long they can hold your horse and whether there's a daily storage charge.
- Ask staff to save keepsakes for you: some tail, a little mane, the shoes and the halter your horse wore in.
- Get the provider's name in writing, no matter if the clinic picked their regular company or you named one yourself.
- Settle who bills you: some clinics add aftercare to their invoice, others leave it between you and the provider.
- Arrange where the ashes should go: back to the clinic, to your barn, or delivered to your home.
- Collect your tack, rugs and paperwork yourself, or have the clinic keep them safe until you can come back.
Ways to keep your horse close
South and west of Orland Park, the suburbs thin into Will County farmland, with horse boarding barns, hobby farms and small herds of goats and sheep around Homer Glen, Lockport and Frankfort. The Palos forest preserves just north have bridle trails that local riders use. After a death, the barn manager or a neighboring farmer may already know who to call.

Questions people ask
Why does the Orland Park page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 22 miles from Orland Park) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Orland Park?
Usually yes. Tinley Park is about 4 miles away, Homer Glen is about 5 miles away and Oak Forest is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Orland Park?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can I bury my horse on my own land in Illinois?
Often yes, with conditions. Rules usually cover depth, soil cover, distance from wells, streams and property lines, and how quickly burial must happen. National extension guidance suggests a trench about 9 ft deep[7]. Check with your county or the Illinois agriculture department before digging, and remember that you can't take a grave with you if you ever sell the land.
Does the euthanasia method affect what I can do afterwards?
It can. After a barbiturate euthanasia, a horse carries drug residue, so the body has to go somewhere scavengers can't reach it: deep underground, into a cremation chamber or to an approved processor; drug labels have required that warning since 2003[8]. Some renderers charge more for, or refuse, euthanized horses. If you're set on rendering, ask the renderer before the vet visit.
