Saying goodbye to your horse in Gurnee

Gurnee, Illinois

How equine cremation works for Gurnee owners

Gurnee-area owners of horses and farm animals are usually offered three routes: individual cremation that sends the remains home, a lower-priced group cremation, or rendering. The bill grows with the animal's weight and the miles traveled. Ask for quotes that list the farm call and the cremation separately, and hang on to a halter, a shoe or a hank of tail hair before the trailer leaves.

North of Gurnee toward the Wisconsin border, the land opens into horse properties, hobby acreages and a handful of working farms raising beef cattle, sheep and goats. After a large animal dies, the responding service may be based in Lake County or across the border in Kenosha County. If you live close to the state line, confirm the company will cross it, and describe which driveway actually leads back to the barn.

A country vet will often stay and help after a euthanasia: calling the hauler, holding the gate, keeping the other horses settled. It's worth asking yours ahead of time what they usually arrange for horses in the Gurnee area and roughly what it costs. They've seen every version of this and will tell you honestly which options work locally and which only look good on paper.

Gurnee's population is around 30,458, the 65th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 37 miles (60 km) away, which is where some providers serving Gurnee are based.

For a second opinion on price, Waukegan (3 miles, a larger centre), Grayslake (5 miles) and North Chicago (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Gurnee routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

60.2%[1]

The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.

6.6 million[2]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[3]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and American Horse Council; we only apply it to this.

How Illinois thinks about cremation

With cremation at about 60.2%[1] for people in Illinois and burial still common, many families here have sat through both kinds of service. That familiarity makes a small ceremony for a horse feel natural: a few words at the paddock gate, a ride past by friends, a favorite song. It can happen before collection or months later with the ashes.

For the Illinois figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Gurnee rather than as pet data.

Heat, frost and mud: timing in Gurnee

In January, when lows average around 16°F, a body left overnight can freeze to the ground and set stiff with the legs straight out, which makes loading much harder. If you can, have your horse moved onto a heavy tarp or closer to where the truck will park soon after death, while the body can still be positioned.

Gurnee winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. Cold buys you time after a death, often enough to wait for a daytime collection, but it takes burial off the table for much of the season. Digging a trench about 9 ft deep[5], as extension guidance suggests for a horse, is slow and costly in frozen ground, so winter deaths here usually mean cremation or a collection service.

How much to budget, including the haul

The prices below are national extension figures, not quotes from local providers, and they haven't been adjusted for inflation, so treat them as a floor. Fuel, distance and weekend calls all push totals up. A written quote from your barn's address, listing collection, cremation and the container, is the only number worth relying on.

Before anyone digs: the rules in Illinois

Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[7] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[5]. Here's what applies in Illinois.

Who to call, and in what order

  1. Stop somewhere safe if a horse goes down in the trailer, and call the nearest equine vet; show grounds keep one on call.
  2. Ask the venue or show office who they use when a horse dies there. Most have an arrangement already.
  3. Decide whether to bring your horse home or arrange aftercare near where it happened. A local provider is usually quicker and cheaper than a long haul back.
  4. Check what moving a body over county or state boundaries requires, keeping the vet's documents in the truck for the journey.
  5. Tell your insurer ahead of any disposal, if you hold a policy on your horse.
  6. Have the ashes delivered to your home address, and get the expected date confirmed in writing.
  7. Let other riders help. Showground friends will step in to mind your other horses and get the trailer home; you only have to say yes.

Tail braids, shoes and scattering the ashes

Flooding on the Des Plaines River and soggy spring pastures make the lowlands around Gurnee difficult for a heavy removal truck. When a horse or cow dies near the riverbank or in a hollow, check that the crew will have a winch, or whether you should tow the body uphill with a tractor first. Summer adds urgency: in July, get a tarp over the carcass and request collection within hours.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gurnee?

Usually yes. Waukegan is about 3 miles away, Grayslake is about 5 miles away and North Chicago is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Gurnee?

January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Is cremation common in Illinois?

For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Gurnee follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 37 miles from Gurnee) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How long until I get my horse's ashes back?

Longer than for a small pet. The burn phase alone takes at least 4.4 hours[8] for an 1,100 lb horse on our estimate, followed by a long cool-down and processing. Around Gurnee, distance and scheduled delivery routes add time too. Ask for an expected return date and whether the ashes will be delivered or need collecting.

Can I compost my horse instead of cremating?

In many places, yes, and it's inexpensive: Cornell and Penn State estimated $170-$380[9] for a 1,200 lb horse. You'll need about 10 cubic yards of wood chips or sawdust, a loader, a site away from water and neighbors, and patience, because an intact horse takes about 9-10 months[10] to break down. Some states restrict it, so check first.
