Saying goodbye to your horse in Tangelo Park
A horse leaves around 38.5 lb[1] of ashes on our estimate, and it takes a large-animal chamber and a winch truck to get there. Here's how that works for owners in Tangelo Park.
- Straight answers on trucks, gates and ground
- Written totals that include the haul
- Keepsakes saved before collection

Tangelo Park, Florida
Horse aftercare in Tangelo Park: the local picture
For Tangelo Park owners with a horse or a few goats kept on central Florida farmland, summer is the season to plan around. A body that size cannot wait long in the heat, and daily storms soften pasture ground, making truck access harder. Share a gate code and a clear route with whoever is collecting, and ask whether they'll need a tractor on site to help with loading.
Owners who live in a neighborhood like Tangelo Park but kept a horse elsewhere often want the memory to come home with them. A shoe mounted on a board, a halter by the door, or a keepsake urn holding part of the ashes suits a suburban house. The full return from a horse can weigh many pounds, so plan for storage, or ask for just a portion.
If you're outside Tangelo Park on a farm road, mileage is the number to watch. Providers based in a larger center such as Orlando usually charge by distance, and a long round trip can add a lot. Some owners with a suitable trailer and loading equipment deliver their horse to the provider themselves, where the provider agrees and local rules allow it. Ask whether that's possible and what it would save.
With roughly 2,000 residents, Tangelo Park is the 210th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Tangelo Park run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Oak Ridge (2 miles, a larger centre), Doctor Phillips (2 miles, a larger centre) and Sky Lake (3 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Tangelo Park routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation habits in Florida, and your horse
In Florida, where about 72.5%[2] of people are cremated, most families have collected an urn from a funeral home at some point and have a picture of how it goes. A horse's return is heavier and slower. Expect a sizable container rather than a small box, a longer wait than for a dog, and possibly a drive to pick it up. Knowing that ahead of time avoids a jolt on the day.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Tangelo Park, not as a count of pets.
Weather, ground and truck access in Tangelo Park
Heat does help one option. A horse compost pile needs to reach about 135-140 F[6] within its first couple of weeks, according to USDA guidance, and warm months get it there faster. If you have space and a loader near Tangelo Park, summer composting is realistic, provided you have enough wood chips on hand before you need them.
Keep other horses away from the body once they've had a few minutes to see it, and keep dogs away altogether. If your horse was put to sleep with a barbiturate, the body stays toxic to scavengers; US drug labels have carried that warning since 2003[7]. In hot weather especially, never leave a horse uncovered overnight while you wait for a truck.

Where the money goes: haul, chamber and extras
Burial isn't always the cheapest route. Renting a backhoe has been reported at $250-$500[8], which is less than cremation but more than a rendering pickup, and it assumes you own suitable land. Composting a 1,200 lb horse was estimated at $170-$380[9] in materials, equipment and labor. Each route suits a different situation, and the table sets them side by side.

What Florida allows for a horse
Many owners assume that because it's their land, they can do what they like for their horse. Usually they can, within limits. In Florida those limits typically cover burial depth, distance from water and wells, and timing. Renting or boarding changes things again, because the landowner's permission comes first.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Tangelo Park can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do when your horse dies in Tangelo Park
- Let the other horses see the body briefly; owners often say survivors calm down more quickly when they have.
- Don't leave a lone survivor for long. A horse suddenly on its own may pace, call or try to jump out, so borrow a companion if you can.
- Keep the remaining horses well away while the body is winched aboard, preferably stabled with the doors closed.
- If two elderly horses are near the end together, ask whether one trip can collect both, which may lower the haul charge.
- Confirm each horse is cremated separately and labelled with its own name, so the ashes can't be mixed.
- Watch the survivor's eating, drinking and droppings closely for several days, and ring the vet at the first sign of something different.
Ways to keep your horse close
Tangelo Park is thoroughly suburban, and with resorts and highways on every side, keeping a horse or livestock here simply isn't practical. Residents who own large animals board them elsewhere, on the rural edges of the Orlando metro or further out in Lake and Osceola counties. If your animal lives at a barn, find out who that barn normally calls when an animal dies, and whether you may bring in a provider of your own choosing.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Tangelo Park?
The closest communities we cover are Oak Ridge (about 2 miles), Doctor Phillips (about 2 miles) and Sky Lake (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Tangelo Park too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Tangelo Park page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[2] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 7 miles from Tangelo Park) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Tangelo Park climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I get all of my horse's ashes back?
Ask, because practices differ. A horse's cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[5], so an 1,100 lb horse leaves around 33 to 55 lb. Some providers return everything; others return a set portion and scatter the rest. Get the answer in writing, along with how your horse is identified from collection to return.
Is there a horse crematory near Tangelo Park?
There may not be one close by. Large-animal chambers are expensive to build and run, so they cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy, and owners near Tangelo Park often deal with a provider an hour or more away. Some run collection routes on set days. Tell us your address and we'll look for equine-capable providers that reach you, including any across a county or state line.
