Albany, California
Horse aftercare in Albany: the local picture
Albany has no room for large animals, and its shoreline racetrack, once home to hundreds of thoroughbreds, closed in 2024. Horse and livestock owners here usually keep animals elsewhere, often at boarding stables in the East Bay hills or farther out in Contra Costa County. If one of your animals dies there, tell providers exactly where the barn is and what access is like.
The East Bay's mild climate means fewer weather emergencies, but a large body still needs to be moved within a day, especially in autumn warm spells. Stables in the hills sit on narrow roads that may not suit large trucks. Ask providers ahead of time whether they reach your barn and what equipment they use to load a horse or cow.
In a place the size of Albany, horse aftercare is usually arranged through the local large-animal vet, who knows which haulers and crematories actually come out this far. The nearest equine chamber may be a long drive away, perhaps near a larger center such as Oakland, so collection can cost as much as a big share of the cremation. Ask for the haul and the cremation priced as separate lines.
With roughly 19,195 residents, Albany is the 265th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Oakland, about 6 miles (9 km) away, which is where some providers serving Albany are based.
Families in Albany often end up using a provider from Berkeley (2 miles, a larger centre), El Cerrito (2 miles) and Emeryville (4 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

What owners in California tend to choose
About 70.5%[2] of people in California are cremated, so cremation is an ordinary, familiar choice here. That familiarity carries over to animals, but horses are a special case. A dog's cremation is a quick errand; a horse's involves a large-animal chamber, a winch truck and often a long haul. Plenty of local owners still choose it, especially boarders with no land for burial who want something to bring home.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Albany tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather, ground and truck access in Albany
A dry day in Albany doesn't always mean dry ground. Early-morning dew on a sloping paddock can be enough to make a loaded truck slide, and irrigated pasture stays soft long after the rain stops. When you tell a provider about access, mention slopes and sprinklers as well as recent weather.
Mild weather makes outdoor memorials easy most of the year. Many owners scatter some ashes over a favorite field or along a trail within weeks of the cremation, and plant a tree or roses over the rest. With a horse there's usually enough ash for both, and for a small urn at home besides.

Budgeting for your horse's aftercare near Albany
Horse cremation costs more for a simple reason: one horse fills most of a large-animal chamber, around 73% of chamber capacity[5] on our estimate, so each horse is cremated on its own. Per pound, that works out at about $0.80/lb[6] at midpoint prices, several times the cost of rendering or composting. Ask any provider serving Albany to list the cremation and the haul separately.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before anyone digs: the rules in California
Before anyone digs, check the rules for California. Burying a large animal commonly comes with conditions on soil cover, clearance above groundwater and setbacks from wells, streams and property lines, and counties or councils can add their own. A horse grave is big, around 9 ft deep[7] under US extension guidance, so the site matters as much as the permission.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Albany.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Albany, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- In the first hour: have your vet confirm the death, keep people safe and let your horse's companions see the body briefly.
- Before anything leaves the farm: plait the tail and cut the braid off, take some mane, remove one shoe and hold on to the halter.
- Within a few hours: settle on cremation, burial, rendering or composting. Whatever the season, a horse's body needs to be dealt with quickly.
- Book the truck or the backhoe, telling them how to find you, the gate width and whether the ground is firm.
- Keep the body covered so dogs and wildlife can't get to it before the truck comes.
- In the days after: find out the date the ashes are due back, and let the farrier, the barn and anyone who rode your horse know what happened.
Ashes, keepsakes and a place to visit
Some Albany families keep backyard chickens, and a few board horses in the hills. Hens, ducks and other small livestock can usually be cremated much like a household pet, on their own or in a shared cremation. A horse is a different matter: individual cremation is expensive, and the barn may already have an arrangement with a hauler. Read your boarding contract, then ask for itemized prices from anyone else you consider.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Albany actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Oakland, about 6 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Albany and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Albany climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 70°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Albany?
Usually yes. Berkeley is about 2 miles away, El Cerrito is about 2 miles away and Emeryville is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Albany page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[2] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What happens to my horse if I choose rendering?
A renderer collects the body and processes it at high heat into materials such as meal and fats. Renderers have served horse owners for 100+ years[8], but fewer plants now accept horses. Nothing is returned, so save keepsakes first. It's usually the lowest-cost option, which matters when the nearest crematory is far from Albany.
Is horse cremation common in California?
For people, about 70.5%[2] of deaths in California end in cremation, so the idea is familiar. For horses it's less common than for dogs and cats, because of cost and distance, and many owners choose burial, rendering or composting. Cremation is most common among boarders and owners who want to keep something of their horse.
