Equine cremation in Siena, Tuscany

Siena, Tuscany

Where horses live around Siena, and why it matters

Horses are woven into Siena's identity through the Palio, the bareback race run around the Piazza del Campo each summer, and horses are kept on farms and estates across the surrounding countryside. If you own a horse near Siena, tell a provider where the animal is, its rough weight and how a trailer can reach it. Rural roads in the hills can be narrow.

Summer heat and dry ground in the Sienese hills make timing important when a large animal dies, and winter rain can turn farm tracks to mud. Italian rules on disposing of large animals are strict, so a vet or local authority can explain what applies to your animal. Having a plan in advance makes a very hard day more manageable.

If you're outside Siena on a farm road, mileage is the number to watch. Providers based in a larger center such as Florence usually charge by distance, and a long round trip can add a lot. Some owners with a suitable trailer and loading equipment deliver their horse to the provider themselves, where the provider agrees and local rules allow it. Ask whether that's possible and what it would save.

With roughly 54,000 residents, Siena is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Florence, about 31 miles (50 km) away, which is where some providers serving Siena are based.

Families in Siena often end up using a provider from Florence (31 miles, a larger centre), Bologna (81 miles, a larger centre) and Rome (114 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

6.6 million[2]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[3]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and American Horse Council, if you'd like to read the original sources.

Cremation habits in Italy, and your horse

The cremation rate for people in Italy is only about 38.16%[1], and graves here tend to be marked with care: a stone, a cross or a tree. A horse's grave on the farm can be marked the same way, and a flat fieldstone with a name chiselled in lasts for generations. If you choose cremation instead, the same stone can sit over the buried ashes.

We take the Italy rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Siena, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

How the season changes your options in Siena

Weather affects two things for horse owners in Siena: how quickly the body must be moved, and whether a truck or backhoe can reach it. Heat shortens the time; rain and snow soften or block the route. Your provider will know local conditions well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs

In Siena, your equine vet is the best first contact. They'll know whether your horse falls under pet or livestock rules, which collection or rendering service operates locally and which crematoria accept a whole horse. Ask each provider for the price of individual cremation for your horse's weight, collection from your yard and the return of the ashes.

What Tuscany allows for a horse

Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[6] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[7]. Here's what applies in Tuscany.

A plan you can leave at the barn

  1. Stay safe first. A horse that has just collapsed can still move suddenly. Keep people back until your vet confirms the death.
  2. Call your equine vet, using the emergency line after hours, however certain you feel. A vet confirms the death and talks you through the next decisions.
  3. Save your keepsakes now: cut a length of tail from underneath, a lock of mane, and pull a shoe if you'd like one. Take off the halter.
  4. Cover the body with a tarp or sheet, and keep other animals away once your horse's companions have had a few minutes.
  5. Call a collection service or crematory, then explain the access: how wide the gates are, whether the ground is soft, where a truck has to stop.
  6. Ask for a written total that shows pickup, cremation and container as separate lines, and check that your horse is cremated on its own.
  7. Tell the barn or your neighbors when the truck is due, so gates are open and other horses are inside.

Remembering your horse in Siena

The farmland around Siena is some of the most famous in Italy: vineyards and olive groves in Chianti to the north, the pale clay hills of the Crete Senesi to the southeast, and farms raising the native Cinta Senese pig with its white belt. For a donkey, pig, goat or horse that was a companion rather than stock, ask early whether individual cremation is possible at that size and how the animal would be moved.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Florence to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Florence (roughly 31 miles from Siena) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Siena page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Siena?

The closest communities we cover are Florence (about 31 miles), Bologna (about 81 miles) and Rome (about 114 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Siena too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Who collects a dead horse near Siena?

It depends on what operates locally: an equine crematory, a renderer or fallen-stock hauler, a contractor with a backhoe for burial, or sometimes a landfill that accepts horses. Your large-animal vet will know which of these actually come out to farms around Siena. Ask them now, while there's no hurry, and keep the numbers in the barn office.

What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?

A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. Soft pasture, steep slopes, low branches and tight turns cause most of the problems. Measure your narrowest gate and describe ground conditions on the day. Our farm access guide covers the details.

Is there a horse crematory near Siena?

There may not be one close by. Large-animal chambers are expensive to build and run, so they cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy, and owners near Siena often deal with a provider an hour or more away. Some run collection routes on set days. Tell us your address and we'll look for equine-capable providers that reach you, including any across a county or state line.
