Where horses live around Mumbai, and why it matters
The heat and humidity mean a large body must be moved quickly, and the monsoon can flood roads and make farm tracks outside the city unusable. If you care for an older horse, buffalo, cow or sanctuary animal, ask in advance which services handle large animals in your area and whether individual cremation or burial on land is the practical choice.
Many large animals around Mumbai are kept by stables, dairies, cow shelters and animal rescues, so the person caring for the animal and the owner may not be the same. Agree who decides before anything happens. For a family animal, ask whether individual cremation with ashes returned is possible, and whether a keepsake such as a hoof print or lock of hair can be saved.
Few horses live inside Mumbai itself. Most are kept at boarding stables, riding schools and small acreages on the edge of the metro, and that's where aftercare starts. The pet crematories you'll find in town are built for dogs and cats, so they can't take a full-size horse. The providers who can are usually out in farm country, sometimes an hour or more beyond the city limits, and they'll quote collection from the barn's address, not from your home.
Mumbai is home to about 12,478,000 people.

How India thinks about cremation
People here know cremation well: about 80%[1] of people in India choose it. What surprises many horse owners is the amount of ash. An adult person leaves about 5.4 lb[5], while a horse leaves several times that, so there's enough to scatter on a favorite trail, bury under a tree and still keep a small urn at home.
That India rate is a human one, published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). We quote it for Mumbai only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, ground and truck access in Mumbai
If you can plan the goodbye, choose a dry day and an early hour. Firm ground and cool air make everything easier: for the vet, for the collection driver and for you. A spot near a gate or the barn aisle is usually better than a distant field.

Horse aftercare prices for Mumbai owners
If your horse lives at a club or a livery yard in Mumbai, start there: most have an established arrangement for a horse that dies, and they'll know what it costs. Ask whether individual cremation is possible, whether the ashes are returned and whether collection from the stable is included in the price.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Maharashtra: Maharashtra costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Maharashtra
Before anyone digs, check the rules for Maharashtra. Burying a large animal commonly comes with conditions on soil cover, clearance above groundwater and setbacks from wells, streams and property lines, and counties or councils can add their own. A horse grave is big, around 9 ft deep[7] under US extension guidance, so the site matters as much as the permission.
Who to call, and in what order
- Stop somewhere safe if a horse goes down in the trailer, and call the nearest equine vet; show grounds keep one on call.
- Ask the venue or show office who they use when a horse dies there. Most have an arrangement already.
- Decide whether to bring your horse home or arrange aftercare near where it happened. A local provider is usually quicker and cheaper than a long haul back.
- Check what moving a body over county or state boundaries requires, and carry the vet's paperwork with you.
- Tell your insurer ahead of any disposal, if you hold a policy on your horse.
- Have the ashes delivered to your home address, with a delivery date in writing.
- Let other riders help. Showground friends will step in to mind your other horses and get the trailer home; you only have to say yes.
Keeping your horse's memory close to home
Mumbai has a historic racecourse with stables in the heart of the city, riding schools, and buffalo dairies, many moved to the green belt of Aarey in the northern suburbs. Beyond the city, farms in the surrounding districts keep cattle, goats and horses. When a large animal dies, access is the hardest part: share the location, lane width and whether a vehicle with lifting equipment can reach the animal.

Questions people ask
Why does the Mumbai page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) reports about 80%[1] of India residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What does a collection truck need to reach my horse?
A firm, reasonably level route, a gate wide enough for the vehicle and space to get within winch range of your horse. Soft pasture, steep slopes, low branches and tight turns cause most of the problems. Measure your narrowest gate and describe ground conditions on the day. Our farm access guide covers the details.
Will I get all of my horse's ashes back?
Ask, because practices differ. A horse's cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so an 1,100 lb horse leaves around 33 to 55 lb. Some providers return everything; others return a set portion and scatter the rest. Get the answer in writing, along with how your horse is identified from collection to return.
Does it matter where the euthanasia happens?
It matters a great deal for what comes next. Choose a level, firm spot near a gate, the barn or the lane, where a truck can get close. If you plan to bury, choose a place a backhoe can reach from the grave site. Talk it through with your vet; they'll help you pick somewhere gentle for your horse and practical afterwards.
Can a pet crematory in Mumbai cremate my horse?
Almost certainly not. City pet crematories are built for dogs, cats and animals up to a few hundred pounds. A full-size horse needs a large-animal chamber, which agricultural units size at up to a 1,500 lb load[8], plus a truck with a winch to load it. Ask any provider directly for the heaviest horse they can take and whether yours would be cremated alone.
Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?
Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.
