Horse aftercare near Streetsboro: cremation, burial and more

Streetsboro, Ohio

Where horses live around Streetsboro, and why it matters

Snowdrifts from December through March can shut a farm lane in Streetsboro's outer townships, and the March thaw leaves fields sloppy. Plan for either by keeping a hauler's number handy for older horses or livestock. Cremation for a creature this big is expensive and uncommon, so many owners decide on removal and hang on to something like a blue ribbon or a leather halter.

Streetsboro's commercial core leaves no space for livestock, yet its outskirts and the neighboring Portage County townships still hold horse barns, hay fields, and a few acres here and there with a goat pen or a small flock. After a death on a place like that, the questions are practical: can a winch truck get close, and will the soil hold its weight after a wet week?

A compact tractor with a front loader is a great help on a small farm, but many can't lift a full-grown horse, and trying can tip the tractor. Around Streetsboro, owners with the right machinery usually drag the body a short distance on a heavy tarp or skid, to where a truck's winch can take over. Ask the provider which they prefer before anyone attempts it.

About 17,730 people live in Streetsboro, which makes it the 105th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Cleveland, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Streetsboro run from there.

Our pages for Aurora (4 miles), Hudson (5 miles) and Kent (6 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Streetsboro as well.

59.1%[1]

The NFDA projected Ohio's cremation rate at 59.1% for 2024.

6.6 million[2]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[3]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

To check the figures yourself, see American Horse Council and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension).

A horse at home in Streetsboro

What owners in Ohio tend to choose

With cremation at about 59.1%[1] for people in Ohio and burial still common, many families here have sat through both kinds of service. That familiarity makes a small ceremony for a horse feel natural: a few words at the paddock gate, a ride past by friends, a favorite song. It can happen before collection or months later with the ashes.

That Ohio rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Streetsboro only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Streetsboro weather and your horse's aftercare

In January, when lows average around 16°F, a body left overnight can freeze to the ground and set stiff with the legs straight out, which makes loading much harder. If you can, have your horse moved onto a heavy tarp or closer to where the truck will park soon after death, while the body can still be positioned.

Cold slows composting too. A pile built in January may be slow to heat, and it needs a thick base and cover of carbon material to work at all. If you plan to compost a horse on the farm, ask your extension office how to build a winter pile, or arrange a collection instead and leave composting for warmer months.

Where the money goes: haul, chamber and extras

The headline price is rarely the whole bill. Watch for the vet's farm call and euthanasia, weekend or after-hours collection, a tractor or skid-steer fee at a boarding barn, a larger urn or chest, and at renderers, possible surcharges for horses that were put to sleep[5]. In Minnesota, the University of Minnesota reported rendering at $150+[6] per pickup (UMN Extension), above the national low end.

Setbacks, depth and timing in Ohio

Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[8] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[9]. Here's what applies in Ohio.

Ohio keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Streetsboro.

The rules that apply across Ohio (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Ohio page. Streetsboro may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Who to call, and in what order

  1. Let the other horses see the body for a few minutes; many owners find companions settle sooner afterwards.
  2. Don't leave a lone survivor for long. A horse suddenly on its own may pace, call or try to jump out, so borrow a companion if you can.
  3. Keep the remaining horses well away while the body is winched aboard, preferably stabled with the doors closed.
  4. If two elderly horses are near the end together, find out if one run can take both, since that can cut the transport cost.
  5. Confirm each horse is cremated separately with its name on its own tag, so the two sets of ashes can't be confused.
  6. Watch the survivor's eating, drinking and droppings over the next few days, and call the vet if anything changes.

Ashes, keepsakes and a place to visit

Portage County's fair in Randolph and its 4-H clubs bring together families who show horses, dairy heifers, lambs and hogs, and those families often know which haulers and renderers will drive up to northern Portage County. A large-animal vet from Mantua, Ravenna or Garrettsville is another good contact. Mention whether the animal lies near a pond, ditch or woodlot, because that affects which truck they send.

Questions people ask

Does the Streetsboro climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Streetsboro?

Usually yes. Aurora is about 4 miles away, Hudson is about 5 miles away and Kent is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Cleveland to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Cleveland (roughly 25 miles from Streetsboro) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Streetsboro page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.1%[1] of Ohio residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

How long until I get my horse's ashes back?

Longer than for a small pet. The burn phase alone takes at least 4.4 hours[10] for an 1,100 lb horse on our estimate, followed by a long cool-down and processing. Around Streetsboro, distance and scheduled delivery routes add time too. Ask for an expected return date and whether the ashes will be delivered or need collecting.

Can I bury my horse in winter in Streetsboro?

Often not until spring. Frozen ground makes digging a horse-sized grave slow, expensive or impossible, and snow can stop a backhoe reaching the spot. Many owners choose cremation or a collection service in winter instead. If you want your horse to stay on the land, you can cremate now and bury the ashes when the ground thaws.
