Davie, Florida
Where horses live around Davie, and why it matters
Davie is one of the few places in South Florida where horses are part of everyday life. Many properties west of University Drive are zoned for animals, and it is common to see riders on the trail system alongside Orange Drive, or goats, donkeys and chickens behind a ranch house. When a horse, goat or donkey dies at home, providers will ask about gate width, fence lines and whether the ground is firm.
The rainy season from roughly May to October floods low paddocks across Davie and neighboring Southwest Ranches, and even a short downpour can leave shell-rock drives soft. With highs above 90F, a horse's or cow's body should leave the property within hours if possible. Before hurricane season, owners of older animals often agree on a plan with a provider, since storms can stop service for days.
Horses around Davie tend to live on small acreages, boarding barns and hobby farms within a short drive of town. That means your vet can usually reach you quickly, but the aftercare provider may not be as close. Before anything else, find out who covers your area for large-animal collection: an equine crematory, a renderer, a fallen-stock hauler, or a local contractor with a backhoe.
Davie's population is around 110,851, the 22nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Davie run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Cooper City (2 miles), Plantation (3 miles) and Pembroke Pines (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Davie routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

How Florida thinks about cremation
Cremation is the usual choice for people in Florida, where about 72.5%[1] are cremated, and you'll hear it discussed openly at the barn. Even so, many horse owners here weigh it against burial, rendering and composting on cost alone, and that's a fair thing to do. US extension figures put cremating a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[3], several times the cost of the other routes.

How the season changes your options in Davie
Heat does help one option. A horse compost pile needs to reach about 135-140 F[5] within its first couple of weeks, according to USDA guidance, and warm months get it there faster. If you have space and a loader near Davie, summer composting is realistic, provided you have enough wood chips on hand before you need them.
In August, a horse's body changes quickly. It swells within hours in the heat, which makes loading harder and can mean a winch truck is essential rather than just helpful. Flies arrive fast as well. A heavy tarp weighted at the edges with tires or feed sacks keeps them off, and a same-morning call to the provider keeps the wait short.

Horse aftercare prices for Davie owners
Why are equine crematories so scarce around Davie? Partly because the market is small. By our estimate, if every US horse that died in a year were cremated at the $800 midpoint, total spending would be only about $74 million[6], too little to put a large chamber in every county. That's why the haul so often decides the price.

Rules worth knowing in Florida
Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[8] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[9]. Here's what applies in Florida.

If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- Tell your child plainly and gently, using the words "died" and "dead" rather than "put to sleep" or "went away".
- Let them choose whether to say goodbye, and give them a job if they want one: brushing the mane or picking a ribbon to braid in.
- Save something just for them: one little shoe, a plait of tail hair, the ribbons from their final show.
- Say goodbye before the truck arrives. It's usually kinder for a child to be away from the yard during loading.
- Plan a small ritual for when the ashes come home, such as scattering a handful in the paddock or planting a shrub.
- Let the pony club, the instructor and the school know, then the adults around your child can make sense of a quiet few weeks.
- Leave talk of a new pony until your child raises it.
Tail braids, shoes and scattering the ashes
Large-animal owners in Davie include backyard horse keepers, 4-H families showing goats, lambs and pigs, rodeo competitors, and people who rescue donkeys or miniature horses. Individual cremation of a horse with ashes returned runs to several times the price of a shared cremation or haul-away, because pricing follows weight. Get the trailer or truck fee, the handling fee and the cremation itself quoted as separate items so providers can be compared fairly.

Questions people ask
How does Davie's weather affect horse aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Davie, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 16 miles from Davie) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Davie page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Davie?
The closest communities we cover are Cooper City (about 2 miles), Plantation (about 3 miles) and Pembroke Pines (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Davie too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I bury my horse on my own land in Florida?
Often yes, with conditions. Rules usually cover depth, soil cover, distance from wells, streams and property lines, and how quickly burial must happen. National extension guidance suggests a trench about 9 ft deep[9]. Check with your county or the Florida agriculture department before digging, and remember that you can't take a grave with you if you ever sell the land.
What happens to my horse if I choose rendering?
A renderer collects the body and processes it at high heat into materials such as meal and fats. Renderers have served horse owners for 100+ years[10], but fewer plants now accept horses. Nothing is returned, so save keepsakes first. It's usually the lowest-cost option, which matters when the nearest crematory is far from Davie.
