Horse Cremation in Vaud: what to know
Equine cremation isn't something every town in Vaud has. It needs a large-animal chamber and a vehicle with a winch, and those cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy. If you're in one of the 1 communities we cover, open your city below for local detail; if you're between them, choose the nearest.
Many horse owners in Vaud board rather than keep horses at home, especially near the bigger towns. Boarding changes the plan: the barn owner controls the gates, the equipment and whether burial is allowed at all. If that's you, the most useful thing you can do today is ask your barn manager what happens when a horse dies there.

Cremation habits in Vaud, and your horse
In Vaud, about 90%[2] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Families here rarely need convincing that cremation is a dignified choice. For a horse, the harder questions are practical: is there an equine-capable chamber within reach, what will the haul cost, and would you rather scatter the ashes over a favorite field or keep a small urn in the tack room?
bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) publishes the Vaud rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
How much to budget, including the haul
Published horse cremation prices are hard to find in Europe, and we'd rather say so than invent them. Many countries handle horses under different rules from dogs and cats, and individual equine cremation is offered by fewer providers than pet cremation. The table shows US extension figures in US dollars as a reference point for what the service involves; ask for a local quote in euros.
European quotes tend to be given per kilogram or by weight band, which makes US figures awkward to compare. As a rough conversion, the US midpoint of about $0.80/lb[3] works out at roughly $1.75 per kilogram by our estimate. For a 500 kg horse near Vaud, treat that as a sense check on any quote, nothing more.
| Option | US reference cost | What to ask for locally |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation (about 450 kg horse) | $600-$1,000[4], plus transport | Individual cremation with ashes returned |
| Rendering collection | $75-$200[5] | The regional carcass-disposal service |
| Composting (about 550 kg horse) | $170-$380[6] | Check it's permitted for horses |
| Source | Extension Horses: horse disposal options | Ask for a written quote in euros |
We built the this numbers from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Cornell Waste Management Institute & Penn State, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Paperwork and permission in Vaud
Paperwork matters too. In the UK and much of Europe, a horse's passport has to be returned to the organization that issued it after death, and collectors may ask to see it. In the US, a vet's note of the date and cause of death helps if an insurer, a renderer or a landfill asks. Keep those papers with your plan. Here are the local notes for Vaud.
A plan you can leave at the barn
- Let the other horses see the body briefly; owners often say survivors calm down more quickly when they have.
- Don't leave a lone survivor for long. A horse suddenly on its own may pace, call or try to jump out, so borrow a companion if you can.
- Keep the remaining horses well away from the truck and winch during loading, ideally shut in the barn.
- If two elderly horses are near the end together, ask whether one trip can collect both, which may lower the haul charge.
- Confirm each horse is cremated separately with its name on its own tag, so the two sets of ashes can't be confused.
- Watch the survivor's eating, drinking and droppings closely for several days, and ring the vet at the first sign of something different.
Remembering your horse in Vaud
Many owners scatter most of their horse's ashes over a favorite field or along a trail they rode together, and keep a small urn for the house. With around 38.5 lb[1] of ashes from an 1,100 lb horse on our estimate, there's usually enough for several riders or family members to keep a little too.

Questions people ask
Who should I call first if my horse dies in Vaud?
Your equine vet, even if the death is obvious. They can confirm it, advise on whether a post-mortem is worthwhile and often suggest who collects locally. Next, call your insurer if your horse is covered, then the barn if your horse is boarded. Only then book the provider, giving them your exact address and a description of the access.
What if my horse dies in the heat?
Call for collection straight away, cover the body with a light-colored tarp and keep other animals away. A horse can't be cooled like a small pet, so same-day pickup matters. In Vaud, the hottest place we cover in Vaud, summer highs average about °F, and prompt collection is essential there.
Should I plan ahead for an older horse?
It helps a great deal. Choose a provider now, check that a truck can reach your barn in every season, note your budget and whether you want the tail and a shoe saved, and leave the plan with whoever cares for your horse day to day. Horses aged 20 and over have the highest yearly death rate in USDA data, 3.1%[8].
Can a boarding barn refuse to allow burial?
Yes. The landowner decides what happens on their property, and many boarding barns don't allow burial because of space, wells and neighbors. Most will help with access for a collection truck. If your horse is boarded anywhere in Vaud, ask the barn manager what their usual arrangement is before you need it.
Is there an equine crematory in Vaud?
There may be one or more, but large-animal chambers are few and far apart, and the nearest to your farm may be across a state or regional border. Tell us where your horse is and we'll look for providers that can take a full-size horse and reach you, wherever they're based.
Are horses treated like pets under the rules in Vaud?
Not always. Many countries and provinces place horses under livestock or hobby-animal rules rather than pet rules, which affects burial, collection and paperwork. Ask your equine vet which pathway applies to your horse before you choose a provider, and check with your local council or authority before any burial.
