How equine cremation works for Gothenburg owners
The land around Gothenburg is famously rocky, with thin soils over granite, which makes burying a large animal difficult even where rules would allow it. Wet autumns and winters leave paddocks soft, too. A collection truck needs firm footing close to the animal, so explain honestly whether your field is bare rock, soft turf or somewhere in between, and where the nearest hard track runs.
Many large animals around Gothenburg are loved companions: the pony a child learned to ride on, a pair of sheep keeping the grass down, a rescued pig at a sanctuary on the islands. For those animals, owners often want something more personal than standard collection. Talk to your vet about individual cremation and what a farewell at the stable or farm could look like before the day comes.
If your horse is boarded near Gothenburg, the barn owner is part of every decision. They control the gates, the tractor and where a truck can park, and many have rules about where euthanasia can happen and how quickly a body must leave the property. Talk to them before you need to. A short written plan left with the barn office means nobody is guessing at six on a Sunday morning.
Gothenburg's population is around 583,000.
84.69%[2]
In 2023, 84.69% of deaths in Sweden were cremated (58 crematoria).

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.
$600-$1,000[1]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
People here know cremation well: about 84.69%[2] of people in Sweden choose it. What surprises many horse owners is the amount of ash. An adult person leaves about 5.4 lb[5], while a horse leaves several times that, so there's enough to scatter on a favorite trail, bury under a tree and still keep a small urn at home.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Sweden figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Gothenburg tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the seasons mean for a horse in Gothenburg
If you can plan the goodbye, choose a dry day and an early hour. Firm ground and cool air make everything easier: for the vet, for the collection driver and for you. A spot near a gate or the barn aisle is usually better than a distant field.

What horse cremation costs in Gothenburg
Published horse cremation prices are hard to find in Europe, and we'd rather say so than invent them. Many countries handle horses under different rules from dogs and cats, and individual equine cremation is offered by fewer providers than pet cremation. The table shows US extension figures in US dollars as a reference point for what the service involves; ask for a local quote in euros.

Rules worth knowing in Vastra Gotaland
Before anyone digs, check the rules for Vastra Gotaland. Burying a large animal commonly comes with conditions on soil cover, clearance above groundwater and setbacks from wells, streams and property lines, and counties or councils can add their own. A horse grave is big, around 9 ft deep[7] under US extension guidance, so the site matters as much as the permission.
Step by step, from the field to the urn
- Stay safe first. Sudden movement is still possible after a collapse, so ask everyone to stand well clear until the vet has confirmed the death.
- Call your equine vet or their out-of-hours number, even if you're sure. They can confirm death and help plan what comes next.
- Save your keepsakes now: cut a length of tail from underneath, a lock of mane, and pull a shoe if you'd like one. Take off the halter.
- Cover the body using a sheet or tarpaulin. Give the other horses a short time with their friend, then move them and any other animals away.
- Call a collection service or crematory and describe the access: gate width, ground conditions and how close a truck can get.
- Ask for a written total that shows pickup, cremation and container as separate lines, and check that your horse is cremated on its own.
- Tell the barn or your neighbors what time to expect the truck, so someone has unlocked the gates and brought the other horses in.
Keeping your horse's memory close to home
Horses are enormously popular in Sweden, and the countryside around Gothenburg, into Kungsbacka, Lerum and Kungälv, is dotted with riding schools, livery yards and small farms keeping sheep, cattle and pigs. When a large animal dies, Swedish farm animals normally go to an authorised collection service for rendering. Individual cremation with ashes returned is also available privately for animals that were companions rather than production stock.

Questions people ask
How do Sweden attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Sweden human cremation rate at about 84.69%[2]. We show it on the Gothenburg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will my boarding barn charge me when my horse dies?
Some do. Barns may charge for tractor or skid-steer help, for staff time on a weekend, or for any days a stall is held. Check your boarding contract, and ask the barn manager what they'd normally bill so there are no surprises. Many barns near Gothenburg waive small charges at a hard time, but it's better to know than to guess.
Do I need to return my horse's passport after it dies?
Yes. In the UK and across the EU, a horse's passport must go back to its issuing body once the horse has died, and it's worth doing promptly. The collector or crematorium may want to check it when they arrive, so keep it with your plan. Some issuing bodies will stamp and return the passport as a keepsake if you ask.
Will I get all of my horse's ashes back?
Ask, because practices differ. A horse's cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so an 1,100 lb horse leaves around 33 to 55 lb. Some providers return everything; others return a set portion and scatter the rest. Get the answer in writing, along with how your horse is identified from collection to return.
My horse is at a boarding barn near Gothenburg. Who decides what happens?
You do, as the owner, but the barn owner controls the property. They'll have a say on where euthanasia happens, whether their tractor or skid steer can help, and how quickly the body must leave. Many suburban barns won't allow burial on site. Talk to the barn manager early and leave written instructions with the office.
Is there a horse crematory near Gothenburg?
There may not be one close by. Large-animal chambers are expensive to build and run, so they cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy, and owners near Gothenburg often deal with a provider an hour or more away. Some run collection routes on set days. Tell us your address and we'll look for equine-capable providers that reach you, including any across a county or state line.
