Stockholm, Sweden
How equine cremation works for Stockholm owners
Swedish winters complicate large-animal aftercare around Stockholm: frozen ground rules out burial for months, and icy yards and snowy lanes can make it hard to move a heavy animal. Before collection, check whether the lane is ploughed and whether a truck can reach the stable or barn without getting stuck. In the spring thaw, mud brings its own problems, so describe the ground and the gate width clearly when you call.
Riding is popular in Sweden, and stables, sheep farms, dairy herds and hobby farms ring Stockholm, on Ekerö, in the northern suburbs and out in the farmland of Uppland and Södermanland. Many horse owners here board their animals, and many small farms keep sheep, goats or a few cattle. When a large animal dies, the stable manager or your vet can usually help arrange a regional service. Ask plainly whether individual cremation is possible or whether removal is for disposal.
Few horses live inside Stockholm itself. Most are kept at boarding stables, riding schools and small acreages on the edge of the metro, and that's where aftercare starts. The pet crematories you'll find in town are built for dogs and cats, so they can't take a full-size horse. The providers who can are usually out in farm country, sometimes an hour or more beyond the city limits, and they'll quote collection from the barn's address, not from your home.

Cremation in Sweden, and where horses fit
People here know cremation well: about 84.69%[1] of people in Sweden choose it. What surprises many horse owners is the amount of ash. An adult person leaves about 5.4 lb[5], while a horse leaves several times that, so there's enough to scatter on a favorite trail, bury under a tree and still keep a small urn at home.
That Sweden rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Stockholm only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Stockholm weather and your horse's aftercare
Whatever the season, the rule for a horse is the same: plan for collection within a day. A body of 1,000 lb or more can't be moved indoors or kept cool, and nobody benefits from waiting. Cover the body with a tarp, keep other animals away and make the calls early.

Horse aftercare prices for Stockholm owners
In much of Europe, a fallen horse can be collected by a regional rendering or carcass-disposal service at modest cost, while individual cremation with ashes returned costs considerably more. Give providers your horse's approximate weight in kilograms and the address of the yard, and ask what's included before you compare.

Rules worth knowing in Sweden
Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[7] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[8]. Here's what applies in Sweden.
What to do when your horse dies in Stockholm
- Let the other horses see the body for a few minutes; many owners find companions settle sooner afterwards.
- Don't leave a lone survivor for long. A horse suddenly on its own may pace, call or try to jump out, so borrow a companion if you can.
- Keep the remaining horses well away while the body is winched aboard, preferably stabled with the doors closed.
- If two elderly horses are near the end together, find out if one run can take both, since that can cut the transport cost.
- Confirm each horse is cremated separately and labelled with its own name, so the ashes can't be mixed.
- Watch the survivor's eating, drinking and droppings over the next few days, and call the vet if anything changes.
Ways to keep your horse close
Swedish farm and stable families often want a lasting reminder even when a whole-animal cremation is too costly. Depending on the animal, that might be a braid of tail hair, a sheep's bell, a clip of wool, an ear tag or the name plate from a stall, and hair or wool can be set in resin or woven into jewellery. Take what you want before collection, and ask for a few minutes if the yard wants to say goodbye together.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Stockholm follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?
Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.
Is there a horse crematory near Stockholm?
There may not be one close by. Large-animal chambers are expensive to build and run, so they cluster where there are enough horses to keep them busy, and owners near Stockholm often deal with a provider an hour or more away. Some run collection routes on set days. Tell us your address and we'll look for equine-capable providers that reach you, including any across a county or state line.
Will my boarding barn charge me when my horse dies?
Some do. Barns may charge for tractor or skid-steer help, for staff time on a weekend, or for any days a stall is held. Check your boarding contract, and ask the barn manager what they'd normally bill so there are no surprises. Many barns near Stockholm waive small charges at a hard time, but it's better to know than to guess.
Should I be there when my horse is loaded onto the truck?
You can, but many owners choose not to. Loading uses a winch and takes a few minutes, and it can be hard to watch. A common approach is to say goodbye, cover your horse, then let a friend or the barn manager stay with the driver. If you do want to be there, tell the provider beforehand and they'll talk you through what happens.
Can I be present at my horse's cremation near Stockholm?
Some large-animal crematories allow owners to attend the start of the cremation or to spend time with their horse before it, but not all can, and the drive may be long. Ask when you first call, and ask what attending involves, since loading into a large chamber uses machinery. Many owners prefer to say goodbye at home and simply be told when it's done.
