Horse Cremation in Andalusia: what to know
Most horses in Andalusia don't live in town centers. They live on farms, small acreages and boarding barns around places like Seville, Malaga and Granada, and that's where aftercare gets arranged. The crematories that can take a full-size horse are usually out in farm country too, so expect to deal with a provider some distance from home, and to pay for the haul.
Rules for burying or composting a horse in Andalusia are usually written with livestock in mind, even when your horse is a family member. They cover depth, distance from wells and water, and how soon disposal must happen. Cremation and licensed collection sidestep most of that, which is one reason owners without much land choose them.
We cover 4 communities in Andalusia, from Seville, Malaga and Granada to smaller towns.

Cremation in Andalusia, and where horses fit
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Andalusia, at about 50.11%[1], but family land and farm burial are still part of local life. For horse owners, that often turns the decision into a question about the property: will you keep it, do the rules allow burial, and can machinery get to the spot you'd choose?
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Andalusia rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Horse aftercare prices for Andalusia owners
In much of Europe, a fallen horse can be collected by a regional rendering or carcass-disposal service at modest cost, while individual cremation with ashes returned costs considerably more. Give providers your horse's approximate weight in kilograms and the address of the yard, and ask what's included before you compare.
In some European countries, part of the collection fee for a fallen animal is paid by a regional fund or animal-health scheme, while individual cremation is always paid privately. Ask your vet near Andalusia whether any such scheme covers horses where you live, and ask each provider for collection and cremation as separate lines.
| Option | US reference cost | What to ask for locally |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation (about 450 kg horse) | $600-$1,000[2], plus transport | Individual cremation with ashes returned |
| Rendering collection | $75-$200[3] | The regional carcass-disposal service |
| Composting (about 550 kg horse) | $170-$380[4] | Check it's permitted for horses |

Before anyone digs: the rules in Andalusia
Distance from water is the detail regulators care about most, and the numbers differ more than people expect. England asks for at least 50 m between a buried horse and any well, borehole or spring (GOV.UK), which is about 164 ft[6] by our estimate, while US extension guidance talks of 100 yards from wells and streams[7]. Here's what applies in Andalusia.
Who to call, and in what order
- Tell your child plainly and gently, and say "died" or "dead" instead of softer phrases such as "went away" or "put to sleep".
- Let them choose whether to say goodbye, then offer a small task if they'd like one, such as grooming the mane or choosing a ribbon for the tail.
- Save something just for them: one little shoe, a plait of tail hair, the ribbons from their final show.
- Say goodbye before the truck arrives. Most children do better somewhere else while the pony is loaded.
- Plan a small ritual for when the ashes come home, such as scattering a handful in the paddock or planting a shrub.
- Let the pony club, the instructor and the school know, so friends and teachers understand if your child is quiet.
- Leave talk of a new pony until your child raises it.
Keeping your horse's memory close to home
A braided tail made into a bracelet or a framed plait, a last shoe mounted on a board with your horse's name, the stall nameplate on the tack room wall: these cost little and mean a great deal. They have to be saved before collection, so if you're reading this ahead of time, tell the barn now.

Questions people ask
Is there an equine crematory in Andalusia?
There may be one or more, but large-animal chambers are few and far apart, and the nearest to your farm may be across a state or regional border. Tell us where your horse is and we'll look for providers that can take a full-size horse and reach you, wherever they're based.
How much does horse cremation cost in Andalusia?
We haven't found published horse cremation prices for Andalusia. As a reference, US extension figures put cremation of a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[2] before transport. Ask local providers for a written quote that lists collection, individual cremation and the container, and compare it with local collection services.
Do I have to notify anyone when my horse dies in Andalusia?
Usually yes, if your horse has official identification. Across much of Europe and the UK, the passport must be returned to the body that issued it, and some countries record equine deaths centrally. Your vet will know what applies in Andalusia and who needs to be told.
Are horses treated like pets under the rules in Andalusia?
Not always. Many countries and provinces place horses under livestock or hobby-animal rules rather than pet rules, which affects burial, collection and paperwork. Ask your equine vet which pathway applies to your horse before you choose a provider, and check with your local council or authority before any burial.
Should I plan ahead for an older horse?
It helps a great deal. Choose a provider now, check that a truck can reach your barn in every season, note your budget and whether you want the tail and a shoe saved, and leave the plan with whoever cares for your horse day to day. Horses aged 20 and over have the highest yearly death rate in USDA data, 3.1%[8].
Who should I call first if my horse dies in Andalusia?
Your equine vet, even if the death is obvious. They can confirm it, advise on whether a post-mortem is worthwhile and often suggest who collects locally. Next, call your insurer if your horse is covered, then the barn if your horse is boarded. Only then book the provider, giving them your exact address and a description of the access.
