Saying goodbye to your horse in Seoul

Seoul, South Korea

Finding horse aftercare that reaches Seoul

Large animals are rare inside Seoul, but horses are kept at riding clubs around the capital and at the racecourse in nearby Gwacheon, and farms are spread through Gyeonggi Province. If a horse or farm animal dies near Seoul, the key question is whether a provider can lift and transport a body of several hundred kilograms. Give the exact location, road access and the animal's approximate weight when you ask for options.

Seoul's summer monsoon heat speeds up decomposition in a large body, and winter cold can make farm access difficult on icy rural roads in Gyeonggi. For an older horse, goat or pig kept on a hobby farm outside the city, it helps to ask about aftercare while there's no emergency: who can collect, how far they travel and whether individual cremation is possible for an animal that size.

Quotes around Seoul can differ more than you'd think for the same service, mostly because of distance. One provider may be forty minutes from the barn and another two hours away, and the haul is usually priced by the mile. Two written totals, each including collection from your barn, are the simplest way to compare. Ask whether the cremation is individual; with a horse it nearly always is, but get it in writing.

About 9,776,000 people live in Seoul, which makes it the largest of the 2 South Korea communities we cover.

Families in Seoul often end up using a provider from Gangnam (5 miles), Incheon (17 miles) and Daejeon (87 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

92.43%[2]

In 2023, 92.43% of deaths in South Korea were cremated (60 crematoria).

6.6 million[3]

There were an estimated 6.6 million horses in the United States in 2023, down from 7.2 million in 2017.

$600-$1,000[4]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[5]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in South Korea, and your horse

Cremation is the norm for about 92.43%[2] of people in South Korea, so plenty of families have already used a local pet crematory for a dog or cat, and it's the first number they ring when the horse dies. Most will kindly say they can't help, because their chamber is far too small. They'll often know who can, though, so the call isn't wasted.

The South Korea percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Seoul, not as a count of pets.

Heat, frost and mud: timing in Seoul

If you can plan the goodbye, choose a dry day and an early hour. Firm ground and cool air make everything easier: for the vet, for the collection driver and for you. A spot near a gate or the barn aisle is usually better than a distant field.

What horse cremation costs in Seoul

Ask any provider three things before you compare prices: can you take a full-size horse individually, what does collection from our stable cost, and in what container will the ashes come back? The US figures below are a reference only; local prices can be quite different.

The South Korea price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Before anyone digs: the rules in South Korea

If your horse was put to sleep with a barbiturate, the rules tighten almost everywhere: the body must be buried deeply, cremated or handled through an approved route so wildlife can't reach it. Beyond that, local rules in South Korea decide whether burial or on-farm composting is allowed, and how soon disposal has to happen.

A plan you can leave at the barn

  1. Check from a distance first if you find your horse down in the morning. Look for breathing before you go near the legs.
  2. Call the vet even when death is obvious. If there's no clear cause, a post-mortem might be worthwhile, and that's a judgement your vet can make.
  3. Ring your insurer before the body leaves, if your horse has mortality cover. Many policies want to hear first and may ask for an examination.
  4. Take a few photos of where and how you found your horse, for the vet and any insurer, then cover the body.
  5. Move the other horses into the barn or a distant paddock after they've had a short while beside their friend.
  6. Ask how a post-mortem affects getting the ashes back, since a diagnostic lab may arrange disposal on its own.
  7. Book collection after you've settled those questions, and describe exactly how the driver reaches the body.

Keeping your horse's memory close to home

Korea's big livestock and horse regions are mostly away from the capital, with Jeju Island famous for its horses. Near Seoul, many large animals are riding horses, petting-farm goats and sheep, or rescued livestock rather than working stock, and their owners sometimes want individual cremation with ashes returned, which not every provider can manage. Commercial herds usually go through agricultural disposal channels instead. Be clear about whether the animal was kept as a companion or as farm stock when you ask.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Seoul?

Usually yes. Gangnam is about 5 miles away, Incheon is about 17 miles away and Daejeon is about 87 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Seoul page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 92.43%[2] of South Korea residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Does equine insurance pay for horse cremation?

Usually not directly. Mortality insurance pays out on the insured value of the horse, and most policies don't cover aftercare, though some include a small disposal allowance. What matters most is timing: many insurers want to be told before the body is moved and may want an approved vet to examine your horse. Call the claims line first, then book cremation once they've agreed.

Do equine hospitals near Seoul arrange cremation?

Many do. If your horse dies or is put to sleep at a referral clinic, staff can usually call their regular provider and hold your horse for a short time. You can still choose a different crematory or collector; just say so quickly, because clinics can't keep a horse for long. Ask for the provider's name and the price in writing.

Will I get all of my horse's ashes back?

Ask, because practices differ. A horse's cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[5], so an 1,100 lb horse leaves around 33 to 55 lb. Some providers return everything; others return a set portion and scatter the rest. Get the answer in writing, along with how your horse is identified from collection to return.

Can a pet crematory in Seoul cremate my horse?

Almost certainly not. City pet crematories are built for dogs, cats and animals up to a few hundred pounds. A full-size horse needs a large-animal chamber, which agricultural units size at up to a 1,500 lb load[7], plus a truck with a winch to load it. Ask any provider directly for the heaviest horse they can take and whether yours would be cremated alone.
