Padua, Veneto
Barns, farms and distance around Padua
Padua's hot, humid summers make speed important for a large animal. A horse, cow or pig that dies in July or August should be shaded and collection arranged the same day where possible. In winter, thick fog on the plain can slow travel on rural roads, so give the provider clear directions and a phone number that will be answered.
The countryside around Padua is intensively farmed, with dairy cattle, pigs and poultry across the Veneto plain, and horses are kept at riding centers and on small properties toward the Euganean Hills and the Brenta. When a horse or other large animal dies, the first question is access, so give the provider the address, the width of the gate and whether a heavy vehicle can reach the stable or field.
Collection is the part that decides the plan around Padua. A truck with a winch needs to back within reach of your horse on firm ground, and that shapes where a planned euthanasia should happen. A level spot near the barn or a wide gate is kindest to everyone. If your horse lives in a far paddock or a sloping field, say so on the first call, not when the truck arrives.
Padua is home to about 214,000 people, the 3rd-largest of the 3 Veneto communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Venice, about 21 miles (34 km) away, which is where some providers serving Padua are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Venice (21 miles), Verona (43 miles) and Bologna (68 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

We built the this numbers from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
With about 38.16%[1] of people cremated, Italy is a place where burial is still common. That can mean fewer crematories overall, and fewer again that can take a horse, so expect a longer haul if you want ashes back. It also means your vet and neighbors will be used to farm burials and can tell you what the county expects.
That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Padua only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the seasons mean for a horse in Padua
If you can plan the goodbye, choose a dry day and an early hour. Firm ground and cool air make everything easier: for the vet, for the collection driver and for you. A spot near a gate or the barn aisle is usually better than a distant field.

Where the money goes: haul, chamber and extras
Published horse cremation prices are hard to find in Europe, and we'd rather say so than invent them. Many countries handle horses under different rules from dogs and cats, and individual equine cremation is offered by fewer providers than pet cremation. The table shows US extension figures in US dollars as a reference point for what the service involves; ask for a local quote in euros.

Rules worth knowing in Veneto
Moving a horse's body along a public road can fall under animal by-product or transport rules, which is one reason licensed collectors do most of this work. If you plan to trailer your horse to a provider yourself, ask the provider and the agriculture office in Veneto whether you need anything in writing first. Cremation itself asks nothing of you.
A plan you can leave at the barn
- Book the vet and the collection together, aiming for a morning slot on one day, so there's no long gap between the euthanasia and the pickup.
- Choose the spot with the truck in mind: somewhere flat and solid, close to the gate, the drive or the barn, rather than a boggy corner far from any access.
- Measure the narrowest gate on the route and note any low branches, tight turns or soft patches.
- Give your horse a good last morning: time on grass, something tasty, an unhurried brush. If you want photos, take them now.
- Save tail, mane and a shoe before the vet arrives, while you're calm and your hands are steady.
- Decide who stays for loading. Plenty of owners choose to leave once they've said goodbye, and hand over to a friend or the yard manager while the driver works.
- Confirm when and how the ashes come back, plus whether the full amount is returned to you.
Keeping your horse's memory close to home
In Italy, farm livestock usually goes through authorized animal by-product disposal, but a horse or donkey kept for riding or company can often have a single cremation, with the ashes returned in an urn. If your horse, donkey or goat was part of the family, say so when you ask for options. Facilities that can take a full-size horse are fewer, so it's worth asking early about distance and timing, especially for an elderly animal.

Questions people ask
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Padua page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Padua?
Usually yes. Venice is about 21 miles away, Verona is about 43 miles away and Bologna is about 68 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Padua actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Venice, about 21 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Padua and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How much does horse cremation cost in Padua?
We haven't found published horse cremation prices for Italy, so the honest answer is to ask for a written quote. As a reference, US extension figures put cremation of a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[3] before transport. Collection distance, your horse's weight and out-of-hours calls drive the total, so ask for those lines separately and check that the cremation is individual.
What should I do first if my horse dies near Padua?
Call your vet to confirm the death, keep people clear and cover the body. Save any keepsakes, such as tail hair, mane or a shoe. Then contact whichever service operates locally, whether a crematory, a collector or a burial contractor, and describe how a vehicle can reach your horse. Keep other animals away until collection.
How long until I get my horse's ashes back?
Longer than for a small pet. The burn phase alone takes at least 4.4 hours[6] for an 1,100 lb horse on our estimate, followed by a long cool-down and processing. Around Padua, distance and scheduled delivery routes add time too. Ask for an expected return date and whether the ashes will be delivered or need collecting.
