In Italy, where cremation covers only about 38.16%[2] of people, the practical tools of burial are close at hand. Someone down the road usually owns an excavator, and extension figures put backhoe hire at $250-$500[5] (Extension Horses). That makes a farm grave affordable for owners with suitable land. Cremation mostly comes up for boarders, or for owners about to sell.

That's why a call to the agriculture department, county or local council is worth making before a burial or a compost pile goes in. Cremation and licensed collection avoid most of that paperwork. If it happened tomorrow: a checklist
- In the first hour: have your vet confirm the death, keep people safe and let your horse's companions see the body briefly.
- Before anything leaves the farm: braid and cut a length of tail, save a lock of mane, pull a shoe and keep the halter.
- Within a few hours: choose cremation, burial, rendering or composting. A body this size can't wait long in any weather.
- Book the truck or the backhoe with clear directions, the gate width and a note on ground conditions.
- Keep the body covered and out of reach of dogs and wildlife until it's collected.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Naples?

You can, but many owners choose not to. Loading uses a winch and takes a few minutes, and it can be hard to watch. A common approach is to say goodbye, cover your horse, then let a friend or the barn manager stay with the driver. If you do want to be there, tell the provider beforehand and they'll talk you through what happens.
How long until I get my horse's ashes back?
