Saying goodbye to your horse in Essen

Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia

Horse aftercare in Essen: the local picture

Essen's southern edge along the Ruhr valley still has working farms, paddocks and small holdings keeping cattle, sheep, goats and horses, and the Bergisches Land hills just beyond hold many more. Farm species in North Rhine-Westphalia normally go to the official carcass collection service when they die, and farmers are used to calling it. A companion animal can instead be cremated on its own, with ashes returned, by private arrangement.

The Ruhr valley slopes around Essen are steep in places, and farm lanes near Kettwig and Werden can be narrow, with soft ground after rain. Before a vehicle is sent for a cow, a heavy pig or a pony, the provider needs to know the approximate weight, how wide the gate is and whether a truck with lifting gear can reach the animal on firm ground. A photo of the access helps.

Sport and show horses kept near Essen are more likely than most to carry mortality insurance. If yours is insured, the insurer usually wants to hear about a death before the body goes anywhere, and may ask for a post-mortem by a vet they approve. Put the policy number and the claims line in your phone next to your vet's number, because cremation can't be undone once it starts.

With roughly 583,000 residents, Essen is the 4th-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Dusseldorf (19 miles), Dortmund (20 miles) and Cologne (36 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation habits in Germany, and your horse

With about 76.0%[2] of people in Germany cremated, local culture leans strongly toward cremation, and it shows in how animal owners plan. For horses, it tends to mean more owners asking for the ashes back than in places where burial dominates. It doesn't mean more equine crematories, though; those depend on horse numbers, not on human habits, so check the distance before you decide.

Source for the Germany number: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Essen, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

What the seasons mean for a horse in Essen

If the ground is frozen, waterlogged or rock-hard, burial may have to wait or become impractical. Cremation, rendering and fallen-stock collection work in most weather as long as a vehicle can reach your horse, which is why access matters more than the calendar.

Where the money goes: haul, chamber and extras

European quotes tend to be given per kilogram or by weight band, which makes US figures awkward to compare. As a rough conversion, the US midpoint of about $0.80/lb[5] works out at roughly $1.75 per kilogram by our estimate. For a 500 kg horse near Essen, treat that as a sense check on any quote, nothing more.

We keep the detailed North Rhine-Westphalia price table on one page so it stays current: see North Rhine-Westphalia prices.

Burial and disposal rules in North Rhine-Westphalia

Moving a horse's body along a public road can fall under animal by-product or transport rules, which is one reason licensed collectors do most of this work. If you plan to trailer your horse to a provider yourself, ask the provider and the agriculture office in North Rhine-Westphalia whether you need anything in writing first. Cremation itself asks nothing of you.

In Germany, horses aren't handled like dogs and cats. A fallen horse is usually collected by the regional Tierkörperbeseitigung (carcass disposal) service, while individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung) of a horse is a specialist service offered by some pet crematoria. Ask your vet which route applies, what collection costs and whether the ashes are returned.

A plan you can leave at the barn

  1. Stop somewhere safe if a horse goes down in the trailer, and call the nearest equine vet; show grounds keep one on call.
  2. Ask the venue or show office which collector they call in this situation. Nearly every venue has someone lined up.
  3. Decide whether to bring your horse home or arrange aftercare near where it happened. A local provider is usually quicker and cheaper than a long haul back.
  4. Check what moving a body over county or state boundaries requires, keeping the vet's documents in the truck for the journey.
  5. Tell your insurer before anything is disposed of, if your horse is covered.
  6. Have the ashes delivered to your home address, with a delivery date in writing.
  7. Let other riders help. Showground friends will step in to mind your other horses and get the trailer home; you only have to say yes.

Keeping your horse's memory close to home

Some large animals around Essen live at city farms, animal parks and small sanctuaries rather than commercial holdings, and their keepers usually have an aftercare plan agreed with a vet. Private owners of a donkey, a pair of sheep or a retired horse can do the same. If rendering feels wrong for an animal that was part of your life, ask in advance what individual cremation costs and involves.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Essen?

Usually yes. Dusseldorf is about 19 miles away, Dortmund is about 20 miles away and Cologne is about 36 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[2] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Essen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Do I need to return my horse's passport after it dies?

Yes. In the UK and across the EU, a horse's passport must go back to its issuing body once the horse has died, and it's worth doing promptly. The collector or crematorium may want to check it when they arrive, so keep it with your plan. Some issuing bodies will stamp and return the passport as a keepsake if you ask.

How long until I get my horse's ashes back?

Longer than for a small pet. The burn phase alone takes at least 4.4 hours[7] for an 1,100 lb horse on our estimate, followed by a long cool-down and processing. Around Essen, distance and scheduled delivery routes add time too. Ask for an expected return date and whether the ashes will be delivered or need collecting.

Do equine hospitals near Essen arrange cremation?

Many do. If your horse dies or is put to sleep at a referral clinic, staff can usually call their regular provider and hold your horse for a short time. You can still choose a different crematory or collector; just say so quickly, because clinics can't keep a horse for long. Ask for the provider's name and the price in writing.

How much does horse cremation cost in Essen?

We haven't found published horse cremation prices for Germany, so the honest answer is to ask for a written quote. As a reference, US extension figures put cremation of a 1,000 lb horse at about $600-$1,000[1] before transport. Collection distance, your horse's weight and out-of-hours calls drive the total, so ask for those lines separately and check that the cremation is individual.
