Neuilly-sur-Seine, Ile-de-France
Where horses live around Neuilly-sur-Seine, and why it matters
Some Neuilly families keep ponies, donkeys or goats at a weekend house in Normandy or the Loire, looked after by a neighbour. If one dies while you are in town, ask that neighbour to check access for a lorry and send photos, then give the address and the animal's approximate size when you request options. A lock of mane can be kept if you ask.
Hardly any large animals live in Neuilly itself, yet the Bois de Boulogne next door holds the Longchamp and Auteuil racecourses and several riding clubs. Many Neuilly families ride there, or keep a horse at livery further out in the Yvelines or the Oise. When a horse dies at a club or yard, the staff there usually handle the first steps with your vet.
Rural owners around Neuilly-sur-Seine often have more options than city boarders: space to bury, room to compost, neighbors with the right machinery. What they may not have is a crematory nearby. If you want your horse's ashes back, expect a long haul and budget for it; if you don't, burial or a renderer may be quicker and much cheaper, and you can still keep a tail braid and a shoe.
About 60,000 people live in Neuilly-sur-Seine, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 3 Ile-de-France communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Paris, about 4 miles (7 km) away, which is where some providers serving Neuilly-sur-Seine are based.
The closest communities we cover are Paris (4 miles, a larger centre), Versailles (9 miles) and Reims (84 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Neuilly-sur-Seine too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How France thinks about cremation
In France, where cremation covers only about 44.91%[1] of people, the practical tools of burial are close at hand. Someone down the road usually owns an excavator, and extension figures put backhoe hire at $250-$500[5] (Extension Horses). That makes a farm grave affordable for owners with suitable land. Cremation mostly comes up for boarders, or for owners about to sell.

Planning around the Neuilly-sur-Seine calendar
If your horse dies late in the evening, it's usually safer to cover the body and arrange collection for first light than to load in the dark. Drivers work more safely in daylight, the air is cooler overnight and you'll have had a few hours to gather yourself. Keep other animals away from the body until the morning.

Cremation, burial or rendering: the costs
Published horse cremation prices are hard to find in Europe, and we'd rather say so than invent them. Many countries handle horses under different rules from dogs and cats, and individual equine cremation is offered by fewer providers than pet cremation. The table shows US extension figures in US dollars as a reference point for what the service involves; ask for a local quote in euros.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Ile-de-France: Ile-de-France costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Setbacks, depth and timing in Ile-de-France
If your horse was put to sleep with a barbiturate, the rules tighten almost everywhere: the body must be buried deeply, cremated or handled through an approved route so wildlife can't reach it. Beyond that, local rules in Ile-de-France decide whether burial or on-farm composting is allowed, and how soon disposal has to happen.
In France, official guidance handles horses, ponies and donkeys separately from dogs and cats, with their own identification procedures through IFCE and SIRE. Before choosing a provider, ask your vet which equine pathway applies and who handles the notification. Equine crematoria offering incinération individuelle exist but are fewer and farther apart than pet crematoria, so ask about collection distance.
Step by step, from the field to the urn
- Stay safe first. A horse that has just collapsed can still move suddenly. Keep people back until your vet confirms the death.
- Call your equine vet, using the emergency line after hours, however certain you feel. A vet confirms the death and talks you through the next decisions.
- Save your keepsakes now: cut a length of tail from underneath, a lock of mane, and pull a shoe if you'd like one. Take off the halter.
- Cover the body with a tarp or sheet, and keep other animals away once your horse's companions have had a few minutes.
- Call a collection service or crematory and describe the access: gate width, ground conditions and how close a truck can get.
- Ask for a written total, with collection, cremation and the container listed separately, and confirm your horse will be cremated alone.
- Tell the barn or your neighbors what time to expect the truck, so someone has unlocked the gates and brought the other horses in.
Ways to keep your horse close
French law generally forbids burying any animal over 40 kg on private property, which leaves a family horse two routes: the rendering service, or an individual cremation that brings the ashes back to you. Most Neuilly owners with a much-loved horse want the second. Talk costs and logistics through with the yard and your vet while your horse is still healthy.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Neuilly-sur-Seine?
The closest communities we cover are Paris (about 4 miles), Versailles (about 9 miles) and Reims (about 84 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Neuilly-sur-Seine too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Neuilly-sur-Seine actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Paris, about 4 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Neuilly-sur-Seine and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in France?
For people, yes: about 44.91%[1] of France deaths end in cremation, according to ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Neuilly-sur-Seine follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can one truck collect two horses from my farm near Neuilly-sur-Seine?
Often, if the vehicle has room and the provider agrees, and it can lower the haul charge compared with two separate trips. Ask whether each horse will still be cremated individually and how they'll be kept apart and labelled. If the second horse is still alive and just very old, talk to your vet before deciding anything; there's no need to rush that decision.
Do I need to return my horse's passport after it dies?
Yes. In the UK and across the EU, a horse's passport must go back to its issuing body once the horse has died, and it's worth doing promptly. The collector or crematorium may want to check it when they arrive, so keep it with your plan. Some issuing bodies will stamp and return the passport as a keepsake if you ask.
Should I be there when my horse is loaded onto the truck?
You can, but many owners choose not to. Loading uses a winch and takes a few minutes, and it can be hard to watch. A common approach is to say goodbye, cover your horse, then let a friend or the barn manager stay with the driver. If you do want to be there, tell the provider beforehand and they'll talk you through what happens.
